I was just wondering if i could make a living of being a scuba diving instructor, and lead guides, that sort of thing. I dont want to make a ton i just want to be able to get by. If there is any body that is currently using scuba is a career i would love to hear about how you progressed to where you are now. Thanks in advance.

Few instructors make much money. I do it full time now for a landlocked diveshop. I got to this point by working for 32 years at a job I didn't like but I earned enough to be able to afford to be an instructor. I also logged several thousand dives before I turned pro. Now days I see divers with less than 100 dives signing up to be instructors.

They make me nervous.

Scuba Diving as a career is like being "called" into the clergy. You go into it because you're compelled or driven into it for the love of the acitivity. You will not get rich; you will have high cost, lots of headaches, and probably feel like a packmule if you go into the instructing end. My career was NOT in the dive industry, but over the last 45 yrs. I've been associated with and helped several dive stores and instructors. Most are not around anymore. Peter Hughes and the Dancers and owners of the Aggressor fleet are the few who hit it big. The chances of Joe Average doing the same are pretty slim. But, go for it---you never know! My $.02

If you are willing to relocate to a tourist area, you can have a comfortable life. A lot of instructors follow the tourist high seasons around the world, others stay in one area. Its a great lifestyle, you can do well if you are good at what you do.
