Learning to dive has always been an interest for me and I am now in a position to be able to do it. I would like to get certified over the winter. Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations on the best place in the portland Maine area to take lessons. I know there are 3-4 options just looking for opinions. Thanks!

The best idea would be to go to each place and talk with them. Get a chance to meet the instructor and see if you even get along. At the initial open water class level the most important thing is to have fun and stay safe!

Google is your friend. I do not know of any in that area, I do think there is a shop in York Maine. You'll probably have one or two choices although you will have to wait for spring for your open water dives.

Nothing like doing your open water dive in an ill fitting wetsuit, 45 degree water, and 5' viz with silt for your first view of a different planet. Been there done that, best of luck.

You need to take a vacation to some warm water destination and take one of those quickie resort scuba courses to get a feel for scuba diving. Then this spring / summer find a place local to take a real course if you find you like it. Easy for me to say, I don't have to pay for it.! :)

Dive local. Learn to enjoy the cold water. I did my OW in Seattle and went to Thailand after. I enjoy the cold diving more. Yes I am crazy. :)

Sent from the deep blue sea.

Took mine at Johnsons and had a great experience. A family owned and operated business that will truly make sure you feel comfortable and safe through the hole class.

How about if the OP finds out if he likes diving 1st, then learns to embrace the cold water? I knew I was going to love diving before I ever got underwater, the cold water was just another obstacle. I've been diving in cold water 43 years, don't like it, hate it most of the time the cold that is but, I love diving more!

Sounds like you need to take a trip down here to Key Largo and escape the winter maelstroms in Maine! Call it a mental health vacation. :D :D :D

I got certified through Aqua City Scuba in Waterville (Aqua City Scuba) and enjoyed the experience. There is also a shop in Portland called Maine Divers Scuba Center (Maine Divers Scuba Center). Good luck with your course and when you get certified, keep in touch.
