The San Diego Oceans Foundation (SDOF), The San Diego Chapter of the Marine Technology Society, and the Diving Equipment and Marketing Association (DEMA) will hold a meeting on March 11 at 7:00 p.m. at Sumner Hall, Scripps Institute of Oceanography to talk about the Ships 2 Reefs program. Since the ex-HMCS Yukon was sunk off San Diego as an artificial reef in 2000, it has become the model for the U.S. Government's approach to dispose of some 400 obsolete warships as mandated by Congress. SDOF's goal is to form a regional coalition in order to work with state and local governments and civic groups to bring some of these ships to California. For more information on SDOF and the Ships 2 Reefs program, visit www.sdoceans.org and www.ships2reefs.com. The purpose of the meeting is to inform and involve interested stakeholders in the process of creating more artificial reefs.

In the same vein, the owners of Hollywood Divers have expressed an interest in working with this organization and spearheading an effort to create another "Wreck Alley" in the Los Angeles area.

They mentioned this in their last dive club meeting. I thought it sounded like a pretty cool idea.

Hey Head
Yes we do want an LA wreck alley. Why should SanDiego, Plymouth England, British Columbia, Florida and North Carolina get to have all the fun. Those rotting ships in SanFranciso have been costing all of plenty for the last 20 years. Why pay to keep them afloat ? It is a waste of tax dollars. we divers need to band together and create something useful....how does a large 300 feet or longer ship in Redondo/SM bay ? Never happen huh ? hmmm only if we don't try. Let's try

Someone please let us know how this meeting goes and where it looks like they want to put more Wreck Alleys in SoCal.

It would be really cool to have more of these up and down the coast.
