Local group is planning a late spring trip to Ramon's. The description says 6 days of two tank boat dives. 12 dives seems a little thin for taking a week off to go down. Is there shore diving from Ramon's? Didn't see it mentioned on their site.

No. There’s nothing to see between shore and the reef. And there’s really no shore, just a small sea wall, so could be tricky getting in and out. I was just there for 10 days, just got back on Thursday.

There is no shore diving at Ramons... however, you can snorkel off the end of the dock any time and there are quite a few things to see. Grunts and small school fish hide under the pier, and we saw rays pass through multiple times. There are some old anchors and such to find. Tarpon commonly patrol the dock at night, probably because it's lit up with blue lights along its length. The swim deck is just past where the grass bottom turns to sand.

We had our own fins, masks and lights with us, so we just hopped in whenever we wanted, night and day. The shop will let you grab fins during the day, but they're closed at night so better to bring your own. It's about 10-12' deep and there are two(!) ladders on the swim deck. This is also where we did our "pool work" for our OW cert.

Plus you can always dive with other operators. You would just have to schlepp your gear to their dock or have them pick you up at Ramon’s. Check with Ecological or Amigos Del Mar to see if they run more than 2 dives a day. These ops typically run out to the reef and then return to their dock for surface intervals And you can run pick up lunch between dives if you are with them all day. They are used to picking folks up from whatever remote location they are staying and then dropping them off at the end of the day. A day of diving at Turniffe would get you one more dive but is a full day. I think the Blue Hole day is only two dives.

Ramon’s is a nice place to stay and close enough to town that you can walk to a lot of different places for lunch or dinner. Last trip down there, my kids wiped the smoothie bar out of banana’s for a couple of days because they had so many smoothies.

Have you been diving with Ramon's before? Read on.
