Any good places to snorkel/freedive on Lanier? How about snorkeling the river below the dam? I was especially thinking below Hwy 20.

Thanks.

The rip rap on the dam would be a good place to go,it has the best visibility and fish life. It can be accessed from east bank park.

Please do not consider the river below the dam as the water is 38-48 degrees depending on the time of year. Divinginn is correct about diving rip rap near the Dam; try accessing the lake via Lower OverLook park.

In case you are still considering diving or snorkeling the frigid water that comes out of Buford Dam below Lake Lanier, you must be aware that the Corps of Engineers releases water from the dam for electric power generation and sometimes just to augment the flow of water in the river to satisfy the legal requirements for flow rates imposed after being sued by Alabama and Florida. The water temps are actually closer to 50 degrees, but it feels like 30-something.

When water is released from the dam, the levels and currents change drastically, with sometimes fatal results.

Here's a web site where you can get up-to-the minute info: Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area - Things To Know Before You Come (U.S. National Park Service)

Thanks for the help. I think the rip rap will be the best place.
