What's making Manatees sick in Citrus?
Monday, May 16, 2005
The manatees are being nursed back to health at Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park.
Something's making manatees sick in Citrus County.
The virus the endangered animals are getting is only seen in captivity. This goes back to 1997, when several manatees at the Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park first contacted the infection.
The park is designed to rehabilitate injured manatees and release them. Researchers are scared if they release the sick manatees the infection will spread to the rest of the population.
The park is teaming up with the Columbus Zoo in Ohio to pinpoint the infection's cause.
