If you ask me. Even if they got all of the money... I don't think the investors would see much of a return on their investment. If every single penny from the 17 Million you estimate... With 73 Million Shares outstanding, that leaves about $0.23 per share profit (if every single penny went to shareholders)

They sure do lose a lot of money every year...

Let's not forget that they pay millions annually in salary. I'm sure that the people who work for OMEX are bummed, but sipping some Louis XIII and smoking some Habanos while they wallow in their sorrow.

The 500 million number came from a newspaper, not Odyssey as Odyssey has never put a value on the load. Also, over 99% of the total number of coins were/are silver, not gold.

As for the US Federal/Supreme court, they never ruled that the coins belonged to anyone, what they ruled that US courts did not have jurisdiction due to Sovereign Immunity of the ship which the courts held to be a war ship. Most of the historical facts show that the Mercedes was a Spanish mail ship more in the line of the Royal Mail Ships i.e. RMS Titanic than a state ship of war. However, for a number of reasons, some of them quid pro quo between the US State Department and Spanish Foreign Office, these facts were not given a full hearing. Then there is also the fact that the decedents of the original owners were found in South America and have not received compensation in any form.
