All li

on fish tournaments

All Lion Fish Tournaments in Cozumel have been done outside of the marine park and is the only exception to using scuba while spearfishing because the lion fish is an invasive species. Also, spear guns were not allowed to be used in the tournaments, pole spears and like devices only.

One more exception to the "no spearfishing is allowed on scuba in Mexico.

Are you sure divemasters are not allowed to spear lionfish inside the marine park?

Why do you think the National Park is near "free" of Lion Fish? Could it be they just don't like being around divers?

Yes, divemasters are allowed to spear lion fish in the marine park with an approved device (elf, sling). Lion fish is the exception here.... there are people who bring pneumatic guns in the park to hunt lion fish, that is not approved.

The lion fish have seen too many of their buddies getting taken out by divers.....go out at dusk and you will be surprised at how many you see.

So one more exception to the "absolutely no spearfishing on scuba" law.

Side note. Do you really believe that people bring pneumatic guns into the marine park to hunt lion fish? Have you ever seen a pneumatic gun in Mexico? I think pneumatic spear guns are one thing that actually are banned in Mexico. I used to own one but could never see the advantage over rubber. Some people seem to think that you fill up the gun with air and then get multiple shots, but mine just used air as the spring and you had to compress it with the shaft pushing down the piston every shot. Much harder to load as all the energy has to be put in in one stroke rather than having the ability to put on one band, two bands or three bands. Also impossible to load a long shaft pneumatic. Your arms are not long enough, so they are all short.

Well that is another interesting question. Is it STILL illegal because the law has never been changed, but it is unenforced for lionfish for obvious reasons?

And whether is is officially legal in the law or not, isn't the marine park rule that you are supposed to JUST use that dumb elf thing? Or did they change that?

has never changed. the only device authorized is the "elf" , they don't seem to care though about small slings being used by divemasters. The elf is actually pretty good if you put a decent barbed tip on it. One of our customers even made an extension for his.The parque marino frowns on divesmasters hand feeding lion fish to eels and sharks.... once you shoot them you either take them to the surface or release it off your spear.

Bah! That elf toy sucks. you only get the willing. and it is too dang short.

And I don't think you should release them in the water column with divers around. Lobsters love them and are fascinating lion fish disassembly factory. 8,000 legs go do work demolishing it. Saw that for the first time on a night dive. The guy just ripped the skin right off.

And anemones love them too, oddly enough. That is to say if a mutton snapper isn't all up in your grill before that happens....

Eels and sharks are no bueno for sure. That mugger shark has clearly had too many.
