Actually my old PADI diving manual from 1991 or so, shows divers touching wild life.
 
Hey, watch old Cousteau films. They were horrible about grabbing/harassing wildlife. It was just a reflection of the times, though. I remember in the late 60's early 70's everyone (and I mean everyone) took out their big dive knives and chopped up urchins to feed fish. Eco awareness was a gradual thing.
 
People still do in NZ. Due to overfishing the snapper in certain locations, the urchins (kina) are reproducing more than normal. It's one way to make a small difference in certain areas but not one that should be seen in one place and reproduced in another. Thus we explained what we were doing.
