After we discuss limits (air, depth, time, etc) I have my students look at each other and determine if their buddy looks like a diver. .

An acronym and a mnemonic are not mutually exclusive. Many letter combinations are both, and the structures themselves are linguistically closely related. The main difference is their respective primary purpose: to abbreviate or to memorize, sometimes as a sequence, sometimes just a random grouping.

Acronyms often have a tendency to become words or semi-words. I agree that the military-derived examples I gave are more acronym than mnemonic, but I fell in love with 'FUBAR' the first time I heard it, and I'd hate to see it fall into disuse.
