I believe what you saw is the rare and elusive South Orange County Big Brown Monster. They live in marine reserves like Shaw's, primarily because they don't appreciate being touched (and they can read the signs posted at the top of the stairs...unbelievable eyesight for a water creature...that says do not touch). They are extremely deadly, but only when someone pokes them. According to local experts, anyone touching them will most surely drop dead within one week after exposure, even through gloves.
