I've dived with a guy a couple of times who was a "safety diver" for a researcher who was doing a PhD or something - there was the research diver, a videographer, and two safety divers on the dives - so apparently there are opportunities to dive with the playful little beasties. He didn't mention anything about tethering or body armour though! Next time I see him I'll have to pick his brains about it.
 
Humbolt squid are pretty stinkin viscious dudes. I remember seeing the squid vid from Nature (Nova?) several years ago that showed Clyde Roper (Mr. Giant Squid) in a cage during a humbolt feeding frenzie when one swam into the cage with him and "nipped" him on the leg!
