The team had been gathering material for the David Attenborough documentary Our Planet II. They were operating an inflatable boat around the Laysan area of Northwestern Hawaiian Islands in order to capture footage of tiger sharks consuming young albatross fledglings.

"This 'v' of water came streaming towards us and this tiger shark leapt at the boat and bit huge holes in it. The whole boat exploded," Toby Nowlan, director and producer, reported. Fortunately, the boat was just about 330 feet from the closest beach and had enough air to safely transport the crew ashore.

Tiger sharks have recently been spotted in greater numbers in the waters surrounding Hawaii, according to locals. They are renowned for their ferocious appetite and aggressive nature. According to Ocean Conservancy, tyres and licence plates have been found inside their stomachs.

Nonetheless, sharks in general—even tiger sharks—seldom attack people.

It's happening.

All of us know that Tigers will only stick around if someone is feeding them.............like on a line to bring them closer.

Didn’t that happen last year too, or is this the same incident.

It was last year. I missed that.

I think I saw that documentary where the tiger sharks were attacking the birds. Pretty impressive hunting strategy, though I felt sorry for the young birds. I don't remember any mention in the documentary of the attack on the boat. Are tiger sharks territorial? Maybe they didn't want the boat interfering with the hunting. I don't know, when I dive in Florida, the sharks always seem pretty mellow and comfortable around divers, but I guess you can never tell. (And I've never seen a tiger shark.)

From what I understand, Tiger sharks can get it into their heads to eat almost anything. I think Bull Sharks are considered to be the most aggressive sharks but Tigers on one of the five “dangerous” shark species.

There are places that do shark dives and these dives often feature very large female Tiger sharks that come in and put on a show for years on end without untoward incident.
