Can't... I would love to but, the in-laws are staying in Florida City. my wife was pushing for us to take a vacation with them a while back so she booked the flights but the circumstances have changed so we ARE NOT STAYING IN THE SAME RV with them for a week. I fear that I would be up for murder one by the end of the 9 days.

Oh how I hear you on that one

I was looking in the middle Keys when I planned my trip in January. I ended up at Lime Tree Bay. It wasn't bad, but still seemed steep at $95.

Here is the info I collected while looking around:

Lime Tree Bay Resorts - Long Key - $95

Looe Key Dive Resort - Ramrod Key - $75

Feb and March (maybe even until mid-April) is peak season - everything seems to be much more than in January (e.g. Bayside resort that was $100 in Jan is $160 in Feb and March)

...if it coincides with that weekend that BlueWater divers are doing their monthly dive speacial (with world of watersports and Marina del Mar) you should make use of that (see thread in the FL section somewhere) - or maybe one of the dive ops has special deals or some accomodation that they own.....

Can't...
The wife is a non-diver so that kind of blows the package deals.

She can go as a bubble watcher: sun herself on the deck or snorkle.
Then you can get her to change your tank on the SI. LOL:D

Some great suggestions Thanks...
already had a few on my list but appreciate any ideas. After making a few calls I find that I am going to be running into availability problems.
In the good old days when I was young and stupid I was happy if I had a sleeping bag and a small tarp. If it rained....sleep on the picnic table.

Check into the condos. We have one rented for a week this June for only $950. It has 2 bedrooms and full kitchen. Plus it's on a dock and has it's own slip if you want to bring a boat. If you rent between 2 couples or 2 people then it's half as much.

try www.ed-ellens-lodgings.com

It is located at 103.3 mm on Ocean side. If you are looking for a PLACE TO SLEEP this could be the ticket. I've stayed there for several years. As low as $49 off season. $79 during season, and $100 on "holiday" weekends.

It just is a room with a small refrig & microwave. Has window A/C and color TV & bathroom. Thats it. No pool or phone in room. Just a couple steps above camping, but alot less expensive.

Hay Lisa 0825 Take Kelly's on the Bay off the list. I contacted them recently and the place has been sold and thurned into condos. Noce list though.

www.vrbo.com Why deal with realtors or hotels. We average a little more than $100 a night for a 2 bedroom 2 bath house on a canal.Been renting houses in the Keys for 12 years now.We had previously stayed in hotels or condos that supposedly catered to divers only to carry gear hundreds of feet, have to rinse in a shower, carry gear upstairs etc...

Thanks for all the contacts folks. We have been emailing and making phone calls like crazy. A lot of the places you suggested where already on our radar so I know we were on the same page. We are finally getting price and availability replies.
Many of the quoted prices seem to greatly increase early to mid February like Stu_in_FL pointed out making it several hundred dollars more for a weeks stay.
My wife made reservations at a Camp ground that also has a couple of rental rooms but we are still looking at a few private rental homes and mobile homes that became available.
HINT: When asking for availability... inform the homeowner that you are Two middle aged adults with no kids or pets traveling with you. It seems you get a response much quicker and they seem more eager to book you. ((Damage issues?))
