have had a couple of dives with less than 2m vis and just can't see the point of diving in those conditions.

I've been diving in near zero visibility. It's all about being under water breathing through a regulator. :D
 
I begin with "diver length",your buddy is a yardstick. Given the distance distortion underwater that provides a reference. Figure 6-7 feet per DL.

I usually consider the current visibilty the distance at which I can readilly spot a buddy and significant underwater features.

I've done a couple of dives where, if you got more than about 2 feet above the bottom, you could no longer recognize anything that was sitting there, but I've seriously wondered why I was doing it.

Wrecks grow fish. If I want to look at boats, it's much easier to do it when they're on TOP of the water :D
