Hello South Florida divers;

Anyone know what is going on with the reefs off Boca? The inside of the 3rd reef north of Boca Inlet is covered in long haired green algae. I noticed it start creeping in after the first of the year. This morning I was amazed. At least the inside half of the reef is covered in the stuff. Almost no other life.

Yuk..

Where's the closest sewage outfall? :)

On a more serious note, didn't that area have similar problems 5 or 6 years ago. I vaguely recall some SE Fl diver doing a pretty extensive survey of algae coverage and noting that it was primarily downcurrent from a specific sewage treatment plant outlet. It may not have been the same type algae, though.

Is it related to these problems reported about the DelRay Beach sewage outfall: http://groups.google.com/group/rec....+report+Boynton&rnum=1&hl=en#a98347b47a16f22a ?

We get that stuff up in the Wabasso/Ft Pierce area around August...call it "Elephant Snot". It's an algal bloom from excessive nutrients in the water (gee...wonder where the nutrients come from). Up here it seems to be triggered when the water temps come up after the annual thermocline event

All that poop from Delray! Although the current has been running north recently.

Actually, its just a little north of Boca. I think it is off Delray Beach. The thing is that the current is almost always running north, even if it is light. And there isn't the large outflow of fresh water being let out ot Lake Okeechobee via Hillsboro Canal which sometimes causes Algae.
