thats exactly what mine looks like by the time all was said and done I spent like $9-10 so that price is reasonable.

My knife isn't quite DIR as I can't tell if it goes all the way through the handle. I had a "Ginsu" knife that I chopped off leaving a 3" blade - and stitched a sheath out of my webbing - total cost... free as the knife had been given to me... of course now I miss my ginsu in the kitchen but at least I know my dive knife can cut through a lead pipe

Thats the way to go! Ginsus are sharp, it was cheap, and works!
I took my webbing to a shoe shop and that were the cost went up.

Before w/ my UK knife, in order to cut mono I had to hold it real tight w/ the other hand, so I would normaly try to cut it then pull out my shears and do it. Now its a simple cut.

btw - another reason to avoid plastic (kydex) sheaths is that a little sand or debris inside can cause the knife to get jammed quite easily inside - not a problem on land (though knives in kydex sheaths still get scratched easily by sand inside) but underwater it presents issues. I was told this is why Scubapro changed their plastic buckles a short while ago (the big plastic quick releases) a little sand inside would cause them to stick, so now they have drain holes in their quick releases to prevent this.

I think its ok for people to dive with expsive knives, makes it easier to grow my collection of them that I keep finding on bottoms :)

Don't fret my friend. Halcyon has you taken care of with its Akona / Halcyon knife:

I think it's about 50 bucks with the sheath.

"Dress for Success" is silent on the issue of knives, however, a $50 knife 'appears' anti-DIR to me.

Just how often have people lost knives anyway? Personally I've never lost a dive knife, but in the course of eight or ten years I have lost about five or six hundred dollars worth of folding knives. Yes, you'd think I would have learnt by now...

For wreck diving, sea snip/emt scissors work much better at cutting line than a knife. YMMV, but I don't even carry a knife as I believe them to be mostly useless....I carry a pair of scissors on my harness and an extra pair clipped in my pocket.

I too clip a pait in my pockets, and before I made my own super sharp knife, I too thought they were kinda useless.
