According to latest update, it might be hitting us here in Dominican Republic. Hope I am wrong!!! So far we have been lucky and all the previous storms / hurricanes missed us.

Welcome our newest member of the storm season! Thats right, its IKE!
Tropical Storm Ike (http://www.crownweather.com/ike.html)
Projected Path? That way... kinda towards the Bahamas.. Cuba.. Jamacia.. maybe Florida!
You guys are really catching it this year huh? I wonder if our typhoon season will be the same when they start swinging towards here. They've already had a few biggies further south.
The world's climate is going to pot.....
Take care over there......

Kim, we've been so busy with storms and bacteria outbreaks I've got a whole 4 dives in this year and thats only because I've had the opportunity at the right time to hit the water... oh, and one good days snorkeling around my sailboat to clean off half the bottom. It's CRAZY! My poor speedo is starting to look...well.. weird on its little hanger.
I'll be watching the weather during Typhoon season to see how it looks on your side my friend! :)

It's starting to look like we should spiderweb the boats in the canal and leave them tied that way for the next two weeks.

My boat has been spider webbed with the others in the marina since before Which Way Fay came by.. Nobody is willing to untie with the line up in the landing pattern out there :D

And Ike this morning is.. a CAT 4
Hurricane Ike (http://www.crownweather.com/ike.html)
Ike jumped from Tropical Storm to Cat-4 in just 12 hours last night and hasn't even hit the warmest waters yet. Good that it wasn't bearing down on populated areas when the surprise explosion hit. This is a classic Cape Verde-type storm of tremendous potential and may well approach Florida at an angle that will take it all of it. 3-1/2 shopping or escape days left and it may be already getting weird on the hiways and in the stores, I don't know...?

Hey Colin,
Here is wishing you well buddy! I hope all these storms turn on one another, and peter out, but unlikely.. :shakehead:
Batten down what ever hatches you have, and hold on tight! I wish the best for you, your family, and all the folks in FL and other areas impacted by these storms.

Thanks for all the updates, I'm starting to get really bummed. My last dive was cancelled thanks to Fay, and looks like our two planned upcoming dives are gonna be cancelled too. But thoughts and prayers that everyone stays ok.

We're doing great here - the sailboat is tied up proper, there's plenty to eat, cook with (dropped a bunch of trees!) and even a few thousand .22 rounds for small game and cast nets.. we're in great shape.
I'm just glad I haven't taken down my shutters yet.
what are shutters? Is that just before a seizure? "Oh dear, he's shuttering.."

Evert - its not as busy as 2004 and 2005 were, but its definitely got that Air Traffic Control look to things doesn't it? "Hanna, your cleared for landing on runway 330.."

I'm starting to call Ike... yIKEs! I'm so used to storm disrupted diving that I'm not even scheduling now, I've decided it may be worth my while to just keep a tank around and dive at opportunity. :)

Bleargh. We're gonna get killer tornadoes in Nashville...better go put more batteries in the NOAA radio that wakes me up in time to put on the bike helmet and cower in the bathroom. (No basements around here, everything built on limestone...)
For those who are not in the dangerzone,a "live"webcam link SunCam.tv -Delray Beach Streaming live hurricane coverage, weather broadcast (http://www.suncam.tv/Live-Delray-Beach-Florida-Weather-Cam.html)

Fla. Keys Visitor Evacuation To Begin Saturday Morning - Miami News Story - WPLG Miami (http://www.local10.com/news/17403218/detail.html)
MONROE COUNTY, Fla. -- Initiating protective actions Friday to ensure safety of life and property, Florida Keys officials ordered a mandatory visitor evacuation, officially beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.
All visitors are asked to calmly depart as soon as possible beginning Saturday morning.
Emergency officials are set to begin a phased evacuation for all residents beginning Sunday at 8 a.m. Times and regions are as follows: Lower Keys and Key West: 8 a.m.; Middle Keys including Marathon: Noon; Upper Keys including Key Largo, Islamorada and mainland Monroe County: 4 p.m.
The evacuations are to continue through Monday at noon, well prior to the current forecast’s arrival of tropical storm force winds arriving in the Keys Monday evening.
“The forecasters at the National Hurricane Center and Key West weather office are cautioning that a portion of the Keys may be impacted by a major hurricane,” said Keys Emergency Management Director Irene Toner. “Because of our unique geography and the possibility that other Florida counties may also be ordering evacuations, it is important for residents and visitors to heed our advice.”
Monroe County Sheriff Rick Roth said that while people should not waste time securing their homes, businesses, boats and other property, there is no reason to panic.
"There is plenty of time to make hurricane preparations and calmly leave the Keys," said Roth. "Our deputies will be out in force, making sure the evacuation goes smoothly and any accidents that might occur are cleared from the roadway quickly in an effort to minimize delays."
Tolls on the Card Sound Road Bridge are to be suspended Saturday morning.
To assist visitors and residents needing to locate hotel rooms outside the Florida Keys, Visit Florida is establishing both an online and operator-assisted hotel availability resource pool for evacuees. The online component should be available beginning Saturday morning by going to Florida Vacation, Tourism, Travel & Entertainment Information - VISITFLORIDA.com (http://www.visitflorida.com) and looking for the “hotel availability” link.
Visit Florida visitor assistance phone number is 1-800-287-8598.
Officials suggest that visitors and residents evacuate to mainland hotels well away from coastline areas.

You know Don, interesting that they mention the suspension of tolls. During the evac for Andrew in '92, the toll collectors remained dutifully at their posts collecting tools as the evacuees fumbled for change!
But this really sucks. I still believe (or hope) the storm will skirt the Keys. These American tropical islands have too much history, too many fragile reefs and much unique architecture. They are also very low and exposed. They are also still in large part inhabited by hearty souls (who did not sell out to the wealthy snow birds) who will not be leaving.
Rock on guys.

I bet someone caught hell for those tolls, and that's why it was mentioned.

Could be moving south but if this holds up it ain't good news
I just had a really good, out loud till I coughed laugh. The all hurricane, all the time, news had the governor, dade and broward mayors and emergency operations managers. There was also a sign language interpreter. Her facial expressions slayed me, stern, happy big smiley, angry, orgasmic, shocked, nurturing, god it was funny. It looked like a saturday night live skit. She was a mime without the face paint.
Let's hope it keeps veering to the south and waits to make the north turn. NIMBY

Sounds like a clip worth capturing and sharing. Got a link...?
Unfortunately, there's no place good to hope Ike will go. He's gonna be bad on someone even after the Keys, including gas prices from the rigs they're shutting down.

Look.....
I still have no freakin power from the last one that just shot through here. Today I need to figure out how to wire the hot water heater into the generator so I can have some hot water to shower with... oh and then there is the clothes dryer to get hooked in.
After spending a bunch of hot nights in my hot house, I went north to find a generator. I drove 130 miles to Jackson and spent two nights in a hotel so I could shower and have AC.
Now I have to keep buying gasoline to fill the generator which ran out at 1am this morning. Utility power is still up to another week away, probably just in time for Ike to make his appearance.
Pardon me if I don't want another hurricane in the gulf this year. Thank you very much.

Pardon me if I don't want another hurricane in the gulf this year. Thank you very much. From an accounting and taxes standpoint, keep your reciepts. We had amazing tax write offs in 2004 and 2005 with all our zigs and zags of hurricanes and no power.
