My new found appreciation for Palau was somewhat dampened when I reached the end of the article and learned that Palau sides with Japan on the practice of whaling. Terrible!

But it's a step in the right direction....
 
Yes the developments in Palau are very promising and hopefully, the sign of things to come in the region - and rest of the world.

But enforcement is going to be the big challenge in this. I've read reports that there is just one patrol boat for over 600,000 square kilometers of sea. I do hope the stakeholders in the region will see the urgency of this and prioritise the necessary funds to assist with the shark sanctuary effort.

We'll all be watching with keen interest!
