Some interesting stuff about SoCal's most recently prominent mass murderer:

"He was so passionate about boats that he began working as a young teen at a business that runs fishing, diving and whale watching tours. He eventually joined the payroll as a crewman, said Don Ashley, co-owner of Pierpoint Landing in Long Beach. He was popular with tourists and other crew members alike and was incredibly fit, finding time to play high school football and baseball while holding down his job. "He was the most even-keeled, good-natured person. A lot of our groups would say, 'Hey, is Scott going to be on the boat today?' They looked forward to him and the crews, the same thing," Ashley said. "When you put five or six people on a boat, a lot of times it's oil and water and they just don't get along. He got along with everybody."

"In 1991, Dekraai went to work at Catalina Channel Express, working his way up to captain piloting ferries between the mainland and the picturesque haven of Catalina Island. The company accused him of using heroin and illegal drugs to lose weight and he was fired in 2000. His breach of contract and defamation lawsuit were dismissed, according to court papers."

California salon shooting suspect had rough life - Yahoo! News

I wonder how often I was on this guy's ferry on the way to dive Catalina? Did anyone here know the guy as an Express employee or working for whatever "business that runs fishing, diving and whale watching tours"?

Don't know why this is relevant to this deranged individual's actions

Not necessarily relevant, but who knows?

I just thought it interesting for the SoCal forum since it involved a ferry captain who used to work on a dive boat according to the article and I was just curious which boat.

If you became a mass murderer it also wouldn't be relevant, but I'm sure everyone would want to read about it here :D

I know where your getting at Moss, if he got along with all divers and the crew wanted him along for the dive charters, how many divers did he murder so the dive operation did not have to deal with the divers they did not like. Did this dive charter take advantage of the killer from knowing very little jail time being under 18. The ferry system here in washington fired a captain, the captain went to the port without his union rep, he told his co workers this is my first incidence in almost 30 years I know these people, when he walked out of meeting the captain was fired and lost his retirement that was in another month.

Did this fella fall apart after moving his way up to captain, they wrongly accused and he lost everything.

Did this guy kill bad divers or catalina employees, there has to be a reason for this madness Dr.Bill and Mossman needs to know.

Of course I bristle at the linkage between this deranged individual and Catalina or any dive boat. As far as we know, neither had anything to do with his rampage.

Is that a dangling modifier, or is heroin a legal weight-loss drug in California? I wonder what the il-legal ones are?! Now that I think about it, I have never known a fat heroin user.
:cool2:

Are you suggesting that Catalina and SoCal dive boats are free of deranged individuals? That hasn't always been my experience, but YMMV.

This is not the place for such speculation. It's already an on-going discussion in the Cozumel forum (!).

I am suggesting that the fact he was a Catalina Express captain (or a dive boat crew member) probably has no relevance to what he did at the beauty salon. You do seem to have an issue with Catalina based on several of your posts. The subject line on this thread could have been written a lot better IMHO.

I don't have any issues with Catalina except for the smelly bathrooms. That's a pretty minor complaint. I don't even mind the other urine smells around the area. Perhaps you're confusing me with someone else?

Besides the various odors, my only other "issues" are: I wish you could rent golf carts for the day, I wish the fill trailer were open 24/7 year-round, and I wish accommodations were cheaper. A bridge to the mainland would be nice too, and some way of warming up the water by 20-30 degrees. I'm not holding my breath on any of these.

But murderous ferry captains, now that is something to be worried about. Few people die from foul odors, but this ferry captain managed to kill 8 people. Otherwise I obviously would have chosen a more appropriate subject line such as "Urine smells at the Casino are even worse than murderous ferry captains".

I'd say your title could be worded better as it doesn't sound like he was a captain at the time of the shooting.
In fact he was fired 11 years ago.

The way the title is phrased seems to imply that Catalina ferry captains and dive boat crews are murdering people.

And I don't mean to nitpick but why is captains plural, is this a type-o?
