How many divers die each year?

Recreational only ? Or including commercial divers ?
 
I was told by a beach lifeguard that many more people drown, or die from exertion, while snorkeling than diving. Wonder if any records are kept about that?
 
Garrobo, while that statistic is probably true, that's likely because many more people snorkel/swim than dive, so the numbers are skewed, unless it's deaths per 1000. Then I'm clueless.

(kind of like comparing number of people who die skydiving versus those who die in car accidents)

I read somewhere once that if a diver had a heart attack whilst diving it would listed as a diving fatality, which would be wrong. So any figures that exist will probably have some errors.
