Some ops, like Aldora, have a policy that everyone ascends together. Fine, that is their policy and it may well be safer and I have no complaints or criticisms of that procedure. I suppose if a diver feels that they are only safe in a group and when accompanied by a DM, then they should ask about such policies before booking dives.
Spitting the reg out on surface can be problematic too. I like to keep mine in until I am on the boat usually, as breathing surface air when a wave hits can possibly lead to problems, maybe even panic.A large portion of dive fatalities occur when the diver safely reaches the surface, but then fails to stay there, drops back below the surface and is lost, injured or dies. This can be caused by any number of SCUBA or medical-related problems and is why it's so important to ascend with a buddy.

I carry one, and some do - some don't. If you're on the surface with 500#, you should be able to stay on the reg for a long time still. Sometimes I do switch to my snorkel close to the boat before passing my rig up ahead of me. I carry a pocket snorkel with velcro attachment. I think the verlcro is $5, and my snorkel folds up in my BC pocket.snorkel.
