After an aborted trip to snorkel in the Bahamas and Curacao (long story), it looks like my next chance to hit the ocean will be in early August on South Padre Island. Is there any beach snorkeling on SPI or will I need to join one of the boat trips?

Thanks.

Although I haven't been to So. Padre, I know someone on flickr who has posted snorkeling photos from So. Padre. He says that very infrequently (just a handful of days in the summer), the water clears up enough that you can snorkel around the So. Padre jetty. Unless you are lucky enough to encounter one of these rare days, it is doubtful that snorkeling will be worthwhile.
