Hello California divers!

My wife and I will be in the Los Angeles area over the weekend of June 22/23. My 11 year old daughter was just certified and I'm looking for some easy diving that they might enjoy, and an idea of what conditions to expect so that I know what gear to pack for them.

Thanks for your suggestions!

"Easy" diving would be Casino Point dive park in Catalina.

As far as what to pack them other than BC, regs, and other standard stuff? 7mm wetsuit. And something warm for them to wear while top side. There may be a lot of sunshine in Southern California, but out at the beaches and the islands, the air tends to stay cool (60s-F).

Thanks for the reply!

I would agree casino point is about as easy as it gets here. After that, if she's comfortable with shore entries, the sites in Laguna Beach are usually very well protected from large waves and the diving is very interesting. I really don't enough to advise one way or the other regarding shore entries and an 11 year old, but I would suggest hiring a DM from a local shop here to take you shore diving. Going through the surf can be a little intimidating, but its also kinda cool too and IMO synonymous with Southern California shore diving.

Casino Point...where my kids did their diving at that age. Plus, Avalon is very cool place and the Casino has movies in its art deco theater.

+1 for Casino Point. The swells and visibility have been horrible lately and the beaches on the mainland side are not the place to dive these days. So head out to Catalina and spend the day there diving, and hanging out. Everything is easily accessible as soon as you get there. Someone just mentioned 45+ vis, so you get the idea.

Getting there is easy Catalina Express // Daily Trips To Catalina Island

+1 for Casino Point - as easy as diving gets, and you get to do everything around your own schedule. Just make sure there aren't any minus tides for low tide while you'll be diving. It could be quite a climb up to the bottom stair for an 11 year old during very low tides

Again thanks to all of you. Looking forward to checking it out!
