SBers,

I have an student spending a month with his grandparents here in the Marshall Islands. He is taking his Open Water course and when finished we will be able to show him some fantastic South Pacific dive sites. He will return back to Canton where he attends college and indicated that he is interested in local Ohio diving.

Can anyone recommend any good dive shops, instructors for advanced local dive training, local dive clubs and of course indicate the best dive sites?

Tomorrow he is doing his first OW dive; there has been an eight foot manta ray hanging around the site the past few weeks, I hope the ray is still there. :)

Thanks,

~Oldbear~

Just heard that the manta ray was seen again today. Hopefully we will see it tomorrow.

How cool would that be on your 1st OW dive?

I am alittle over 2 hours west of canton oh. We have 3 quarries White star, Portage, and Gilboa. I beleive there is 2 quarries on the north east side of Ohio also. Cant really recommend a shop near canton but a great one here in Toledo is Sea Level Scuba. They have fun dives at White Star regularly.

I live in Canal Fulton a small suburb 10 minutes outside of Canton. Gilboa, White Star and Portage have been mentioned they are the best. Those locations are approximately 2.5 hours from Canton and worth the trip. Not so good, although a place to get wet is Nelson Ledges State park approximately 1 hour away and a new quarry named North Point that I have not yet been too. North Point is about 2 hours away. I love Gilboa and White Star. A very good dive shop in the area is Atlantis Outfitters (330)699-1414. I frequent Gilboa.

Thanks Gentlemen for the tips. I will pass them along to him.

BTW -- Yesterday was his first OW dive...saw a black tip making its patrol about 10' from us and when we did our turn-around the manta ray was following us. On my first OW dive I just saw mainly Sgt Majors in Mexico; which was better them my GF's first OW dive all she saw was a crayfish in Colorado. :)

I would be glad to meet up with him sometime and head to any of the mentioned sites if he is interested.

I am also out at Gilboa and Portage during the season. Will be at Gilboa this coming 23rd thru the 31st. In July at Portage for the DAN BBQ. And if he wants to do some training I do travel to Ohio frequently.

Thanks guys...I will pass along your contact info. I will see if he wants to join SB.

Training Update: OW Dive 2 - No Charismatic Mega Fauna sightings today. He really enjoyed just hovering in a horizontal trim working on his breathing control just looking at all of the smaller life on reef heads.

Deep Six Specialists is a NAUI shop on Brown St in Akron. Atlantis Outfitters recently moved to Barberton, maybe a 15-20 minute drive from where they were, although I prefer the Barberton location to the old Uniontown one. They are a PADI shop. I frequent both shops really.

The great thing about Atlantis Outfitters is they organize events monthly in the summer... cookouts during the week and then they designate one Saturday or Sunday each month for a "club dive" at one of the quarries.

I'm always looking for more dive buddies. Would love to get out to Gilboa this year. Shoot me a PM if you want and I'll give you my email.
