The Reef Rakers is a group of Environmentally friendly divers who help make Florida waters a better place. This group is open to all certified divers, mainly from the Bradenton / Sarasota area. I wanted to alert divers of this as it is a good chance to do some good to the environment and can be loads of fun. So, try to plan your next dive trip with the Reef Rakers ! Go to http://www.reefrakers.org or info@reefrakers.org

I just wanted to say again, that it was a pleasure meeting you at the Venice Birthday/Beach Bash. You and "your clan" were a real pleasure.

I plan on passing a link to this thread to Lil Sis. Perhaps some others here would like to let their teens know.

I commend the efforts of Reef Rakers :wave-smil:

I love letting people know about great orginizations, so here is a list of some of them in Florida:

. The ManaTEENS- For people who want to help out Manatee county

. The Reef Rakers- for all environmentally friendly certified divers who want to clean up the water

. The Sarasota Bay Buddies- for younger people who want to help the environment

You can learn more about these programs at:

These are fantastic. Thanks.

Looks like a gook organization. I checked into it and it looks like they do a great deal of good work. I wonder if the idea could be transfered to other locations. After diving socal islands last week and seeing ghost traps (which I reported to the skipper of the dive boat) still fishing and several reefs with monofillament entanglement, it might be a good idea. Something to build on in addition to the annual coastal cleanups.

We have fallen upon tragic times. The founder of the Reefrakers, Mr. Rick Smith,
Is taking part in his last dive season with the reefrakers. Even worse, the entire Reefrakers program may be ending. For all of us reefrakers, this is devistating news. So far, I don't have much info on what's going on, but it is definitley a sad time for me.:depressed:

But, all good things must come to an end, and still, we may find a way to save the Reefrakers. I will keep everyone on scubaboard posted as soon as I get news.

Sorry to learn about this possibly being Reef Rakers last season.

From what I could see, it was a great organization that challenged youngsters and adults both above and below the water with public service projects. And the idea of removing fishing line from fouling artificial reefs is a simple but very practical application of public service and maintaining the environment. I got a few comments on my reef rakers t-shirt in pin in Alaska.

For what it is worth, my advice is to enjoy this season of diving working hard on the projects and refining your diving skills. You will get a certain pride and satisfaction from knowing that you were part of something special.

As to the future of Reef Rakers. It has been my experience that good ideas may go on hold for a while, but they never really die. They get mixed, recombined, and repackaged and eventually come back in some form or another.

I have worked with the Reef Rakers a number of times. I love a number of things about the organization.

Rick is great with the kids. Comes from being a science teacher I guess.

I like the fact that kids get involved in the effort. My step-son and daughter have participated a number of times.

I also like the cause. They not only get fishing lines, but also trawling nets and garbage.

Addition I have met some great people through the organization.

Rick, if you are reading this good luck, I hope you change your mind.
