Hello,
my wife, 24yo daughter and I are newly certified PADI OW divers. My daughter lives in LA and has from the Friday before until day after Christmas off. Any suggestions for a quick, appropriate for our skills, diving excursion.
Thanks!

There's a lot of good diving off LA, but a lot of it may be uncomfortable for your skill level. Avalon's dive park is OK but I'd probably go the other way and get on one of the dive boats out of the Long Beach area to hit up Catalina. I'm pretty partial to the Pacific Star and the Sand Dollar. YMMV

Maui.

You could rent a condo in the Kihei area and boat dive at Molokini Crater (easy, shallow, excellent diving) with someone like Mike Severns, Ed Robinsons or B&B Scuba. You can also arrange escorted shore dives with Shaka Divers or Maui Dreams Dive Co. Later that week if you felt comfortable you could repeat some of those same dives on your own for just the rental costs. They're mostly all easy sandy beach entries in that area with short swims out to a shallow reef - the good stuff starts as shalllow as 15-20' at some of them. http://shorediving.com/Earth/Hawaii/Maui/index.htm - #'s 3,4,5 or 11-19 are all good easy options.

Within your timeframe there's a 5hr direct flight that arrives mid-day. The return doesn't get back until 11:30PM on the 26th though. It's also $858pp. And since it's high season on Maui, hotels/condos will be higher. It's going to be crowded and expensive over the holidays so pre-book your dives if you decide to go.

Note the OP said "quick" excursion. That would make Robert and Matt's suggestions the best options. Our dive park has plenty to offer (I know, I've dived it a few thousand times) and it is a pretty safe place for newly certified divers. However, Matt's suggestion of doing a boat dive from a mainland base like Long Beach or San Pedro would take you to two or three different Catalina dive destinations and be pretty cost effective.

I would go to the Avalon Underwater Park. It is an easy entry, the kelp forest is great, there is something for everyone, and if you get cold or when you are done you can walk back to town for pizza by the ocean and then return to the Mainland.

I read excursion as "short vacation" since
has from the Friday before until day after Christmas off.
At least from my perspective, I'd consider that divable time...:D

Maybe he can provide some clarification...

I would do one of the dive boats from San Pedro or Long Beach also. Catalina is nice, but the cost of the ferry, parking at the terminal, local food cost and logistics make it less appealing for a day trip. With the dive boats it just showing up with your gear. Often you can arrive the night before and sleep on the boat which avoids the early morning drive on top of everything else.

Thanks very much. Any thoughts about diving La Jolla Cove or other dives near San Diego?

Thanks Diversteve,
My daughter gets off work sometime on Friday and has to be back at work day after Christmas. She lives in LA and we live in Chicago. We, my wife and I, have more time off. Maui sounds wonderful. If not this time around, for sure in the future!
