well...

most of the boats in P'cola are headed to the Oriskany..... Why? because people are linning up for it.

The Destin boats you pretty much have to dive where the boat goes.... and they pretty much are wimpy and only run to the sites closest to the pass. So bridge rubble, the Tug off Crystal Beach, etc. Not bad dives, but they just do the same spots repeatively too much.

Pick up a copy of Diving Guide to Underwater Florida, 11th Edition

It's well worth the purchase price and has a chapter on both the Pensacola and Destin areas and decent descriptions of the wrecks/sites in the area

If you can get a ride out to the Fort Pickens Jetties, they are also good. If you can get any of the boats to go to the inshore wrecks, there are many great wreck dives in the Pensacola area besides the Oriskany, but everyone wants to dive the O, so that is where they usually head.

Most of the inshore dives in the Pensacola area (10 miles out from the pass) are pretty murky this summer for some reason. may be due to all the rain and the flooding of the Mississippi River. Midshore dives have much better vis. Any given weekend there are trips to these sites as well as trips to the Oriskany.

yeah... there's been some weird algae bloom or something in the gulf this year. I heard it was because of the rain from the MIssissippi also.

there's a thread on it somewhere here that has more details.

While it is true that the Oriskany is tremendously popular, and rightly so, we are regularly diving many other sites. The reports are correct, vis is spotty at best on the inshore sites. It can be good one day and can't see your hand in front of your face the next. It is more reliable on the midshore and offshore sites and well worth the extra cost and run time. Fewer jellies too. Y'all come see us.
