Had our first shark encounter of the year

but this one was at the surface. On yesterday's second dive a shark swam by - dorsal fin out of the water - just as we were about to enter the water. Anyone know why a shark might choose to swim at the (boring) surface when there is a reef loaded with fish 60 feet below ?
 
Outside (eastern) edge of 3rd reef off Hillsboro Beach.
 
Someone probably dumped something on the way in. I would say the shark was following the scent trail.
 
It may have been curious about the boat. In the days when our waters "teemed" with blue sharks, we often had them swimming at the surface near our boats. Of course the long liners and gillnets took care of that.
