Which California coast fish and invert books do you recommend? Are there any good field guides focusing on the Monterey Bay?

Awesome! Thanks! Bookmarked, along with his Monterey conditions page that I already regularly check.

Dude Chuck's got everything covered :)

Chuck is the man!

I've picked up just a couple books that I bring out at dinner post dive so we can debate about what we saw. They're both books by Daniel Gottshall - Guide to Marine Invertebrates, Alaska to Baja California and Pacific Coast Inshore Fishes. They're both pretty good books with great pictures, but are by no means totally comprehensive. The other reason I like these books is that they can be found really cheap second hand on isbn.nu, amazon, etc. and are small. This allows me to pack more of my scuba gear in the car :D.

The Gotshall inverts book is a good place to start.

The Humman fish book is better organized for amateurs than the Gotshall
book, and far more complete, but be sure to get the second edition of
Humman.

One thing I do with these books is to put a diagonal pencil line through
the picture of anything that's not documented in the waters I dive. That
way it's easy to tune them out on a search, and if I ever find one, it's
immediately apparent as a range extension.
