Today I noticed trimix and 1.7 are out. I understand from the website that v1.7 is the downgrade to Trimix, but is there a reason to upgrade 1.6 to 1.7 if I do not install trimix first?
Are change logs available for the different versions? What did I get by going from 1.5-1.6 and where will 1.7 get me?
Any new features in either the trimix or 1.7 (other than tri-mix itself) ?
I had the same question, so I called Scubapro today. I was told that the only purpose for the v1.7 firmware is to remove the Trimix and reset the unit to factory settings; no additional features are included beyond what is already in v1.6.
Apparently performing an over-write of v1.7 with v1.6 can lockout the computer and is not advised. Not too sure why they're always so vague about the specifics when it comes to posting these revisions.

v1.6 + Trimix + v1.7 = 1.6??? I agree, it's not terribly intuitive.
If you are not going to use Trimix, then there is really no reason to install it. If you do install Trimix and later decide you don't want it, then the v1.7 firmware removes it by resetting the entire unit back to factory v1.6, which presumably would wipe all customised settings. I guess it's too much to ask for them to just spell all of this out ahead of time, rather than having to piece information together after the fact.
I'm afraid I do not have any detailed information regarding the specific differences between all the versions.

Our TRIMIX algorithm for Galileo dive computers is now available for all certified TRIMIX divers.
You can download the TRIMIX algorithm free of charge onto your Galileo computer if you have 1.6 or higher firmware installed in a Galileo Sol. On Galileo Luna and Terra models, the PMG upgrade is required along with the 1.6 firmware.
--The most recent Galileo Sol firmware is available for download on our website.
--No scratch card is necessary to upgrade the TRIMIX algorithm.
--However, it's important that divers know
(1) it is for certified TRIMIX divers and
(2) although the TRIMIX can be turned ON or OFF on the Galileo, only divers planning to actually dive with TRIMIX should install the algorithm.
IMPORTANT WARNING: If a diver should want to return their Galileo to the original algorithm, removing the TRIMIX one, they will have to downgrade to version 1.7 of the firmware (available on scubapro.com) as re-installing the 1.6 or older version may completely block the computer.
To download the 1.7 firmware (downgrade, if you need to uninstall your TRIMIX) go to: http://www.scubapro.com/instruments/computers/products/galileo-firmware-17.aspx
The Serial and ID numbers must be included and the disclaimer checked off. It is imperative to read the ‘Read me’ document and TRIMIX manual included in the upgrade, before installing the trimix software onto your dive computer. Please inform your TRIMIX diving customers that there is an important warning in the 'Read me' document similar to the note above, in case they may want to uninstall the TRIMIX algorithm.
I used the beta Trimix firmware and it made some useful changes even in Nitrox mode - such as the ability to support 10 tanks without the restriction of T1->TD->T2 population order (some of my dives used T1 + T2 without TD turned on, you couldn't have T2) plus it introduced a 16 compartment model even for non-trimix. I'm assuming the production release does the same so it's your call if you want these features (this doesn't constitute a recommendation BTW).

Scubapro can you confirm if the trimix update has 10 tank support and 16 compartment model?
Thank you all for chiming in. Please read the sticky note that references the Trimix. Yes, it changes the algorithm so only divers intending on using Trimix should install the software. You need 1.6v first on your unit to install the Trimix. If one decides later that they wish to un-install the Timix software, they first need to install 1.7v to allow a proper 'backwards' move. 1.6v & 1.7v Galileo upgrades have no other benefits or additions.
