Does anyone have recommendations for where to stay on Ambergris Caye in Belize. There are so many choices I don't know where to start.

Thanks
I have been to belize a bunch of times. The last 4 I have stayed at the Mayan Princess. Great rooms, nice ammenities, excellent location. The owners are great people Rusty and Sharon. If you stay there you'll have a great time.

I was in Ambergris almost 2 years ago. That place books up so wherever you stay, reserve 4 weeks in advance if you can. If I were to do it again I'd stay close to town. Maybe even in town. It really depends on what you want (e.g., beach, pool, quiet, romance). I stayed at the Tropica which was nice enough and on the beach, but quiet because it was far from town and the dive shops.

You may find this link useful http://ambergriscaye.com/pages/lodge/lodging.html

I'd say you want to be somewhere between Ramone's and the Sun Breeze (see the map in the link above). If I had my choice I 'd stay at the Belizean Reef Suites. I rode through it on my bike and it looked perfect. Grass roofed huts right on the water.

A lot depends on your budget, the time of your visit (prices are very negotiable in low season, not at all in high), and what you like to do during the day and in the evenings. If you want peace and tranquility don't be surprised if that means you can't get around in the evening even if you want to, and maybe there'l be no shops anywhere around. I always reckon the best place for a first visit is within a couple of miles of town. You can do some research and decide where you'd like to go the second time.

The smartest thing I did there was rent a bicycle for the week. I used it to get to town, the market, and every day to the boat. It's a nice island for bicycling at the north and south end, and the town's streets are safe to ride on too. And stay in a hotel close to town. Amberbris has a nightlife. I remember this one bar that had a betting game involving chicken poop. I won't tell you the details.

yeah chicken drop at the spindrift (I think). I stayed a ways out of town at banana beach and although the hotel was very nice and it was rather quiet and peaceful, I wish I had stayed closer to town because eventually I grew tired of the drunken stumbling down the beach in the dark to the hotel all the way from town. They had two great pools and the monkey business travel shop which will arrange pretty much anything you want to do. Not to mention the great free breakfast they serve in the morninig which is included with the price of your room.

If you would like to see pictures I took of banana beach while there just PM or email me.

My husband and I stayed at the mayan princess 2 years ago and were very pleased. Clean rooms with a kitchen and small living room. I e-mailed them directly and they were able to get me a very reasonable rate and arrange airfare.
It is close to to town, so we were able to walk to the grocery store, restaurants, and the casino. We rented a golf cart for a couple of days and explored the island.
Hope you have a great time, we did!!!

Banana Beach. I am getting ready to go down this week for a month. It will be my fourth stay there. The walk from town tends to keep the pounds off. Its about 1.5 miles from the center of San Pedro.

Thanks for all the replys, I have looked into mayan princess and banana beach and both look nice. Who do you recommend for dive operators?

Protech!! Peter and his guys are great. I think his website is currently down, but his direct email is as follows.

We dove with them for 10 days in March 2005 and couldn't have enjoyed it more. We'll be returning this next March. Local diving was with Protech and the contracted us with Amigo's Del Mar for the Long distance full day trips. Amigo's is another top notch operation. Here's a pic of the Protech shop. Ken :42:
