Since when does PADI do anything in that position? Is that new?

My PADI OW book mentions holding your right hand over your head and venting with the left ... nothing about extending or superman postion. (OW version 2.5 pg 119).

That is the superman position - it's not a 'PADI' term, it's just how I, and many other instructors describe it.

Ahh I see. I thought you actually meant being horizontal in the water instead of going 'heads up'...

I knew that made too much sense for ...

Nevermind :)

I thought the "e" in stella stood for "exhaust" your BC. I could be wrong though.

Ahh. No - that would be a nightmare to teach on OW !! I just use the term 'superman', as it helps the students remember the position better and are more likely to get it right first time.

Different instructors use different terms, I use 'extend' to cover both arms (left arm up, with inflator hose ready to deflate, right arm up to protect the head), otherwise I find the students tend to just hold the inflator up and don't protect their head with the other hand. Then I put their right hand above their head, and they drop the inflator, I pick that back up for them and they drop the right hand again.....etc etc.

These are the 5 points as outlined in the PADI instructor manual. STELA, or SORTED are useful acronyms to remember them - I always use "Elevate" (your BCD hose) for the "E" - as long as the point gets across it doesn't really matter.

Five Point Ascent
1. Signal buddy — wait until instructor signals
2. Note time
3. One hand over head, other on BCD control
4. Look up
5. Swim up slowly while rotating

Five Point Descent
1. Signal intention to descend and wait for acknowledgment from buddy.
2. Orient to some surface object for reference.
3. Remove the snorkel and replace it with the regulator mouthpiece.
4. Check the time/start stopwatch function.
5. Completely deflate the BCD to begin the descent.
Remind students to descend feet-first, or at least with head above feet to remain oriented. Remind them to equalize early and often, and to stop the descent if they have trouble equalizing.

Happy up-and-downing!

C.

I like to add an "E" in "SORTD" for descending. The "E" is for equalize.

It's already there
