Sure. I'm in this to have fun. If I'm not having fun, I get my butt out of the water.

I called a dive off on Friday. I'm in Morehead City, NC on a trip to dive the wrecks. The weather was supposed to be crappy this week, but it has improved from the projections I got as late as Wednesday night. Friday morning they were calling for 6-8 seas. I had serious problems on my last ocean dives (spinal surgery back in March) so I'm pretty gunshy about getting in over my head. I didn't go out on the boat. Most of the descriptions of the diving that I got involved the terms "washing machine". So I'm glad I didn't go.

Yesterday the weather was projected to be better and I went out. The waves weren't bad, but it rained most of the day. We did two dives on the U-352. I didn't see any sharks, but I saw about 6 lionfish.

There is absolutely no shame in calling a dive. I drill that into all of the students I work with and all of the instabuddies that I get paired with. Diving is not a competitive sport.

I've bagged my own due to a cold/bad sinus issues (meaning I stayed home) ANd I've also been on a dive (recently) where my buddy had clearing issues due to allergies, that would not let up, and we aborted it. No sense hurting someone (or yourself) for something that will be there tomorrow.

Cozumel dives are generally drift dives and there often is not time for discussion once divers launch from the boat. For some reason, I couldn't equalize one ear. After several up and down attempts, and realizing the DM and other divers were long gone, my wife (my buddy) and I aborted. Of course, there's an interesting thing about drift dives: if you abort, you do not return to the surface where you entered. In our case, the boat had kept pace with us pretty accurately and we had no return difficulty.

My buddy and I aborted our deep dive in our A/O/W class. We got down on the wreck of the Almirante, and did a buddy check. We looked around for our instructor, but he was no where to be found. After we realized that he wasn't there we signalled to go up. After we surfaced we found him lounging on the deck of the boat. He said he didn't feel like diving that day so he decided to come up. We made sure he never taught again.

What I mean is did you ever say NO to a dive or did you abort (a part of ) a dive.

I've aborted a couple of dives due to the visibility being so bad as to make it pointless.

Other than that I've always agreed the plan sufficiently beforehand that I'm happy with it. Fortunately I've never had a buddy who's decided during the dive to dive beyond the plan.

Question is, did you abort a dive when a DM/guide says it's ok, and YOU didn't like it.
So did you ever go against a DM/guide.

i haven't but there was one instance i wished i had. i was fairly new to diving then (<20 dives) so i couldn't really blame myself for sticking with the DM guide. i was the only new diver among the experienced one and i was sucking up air like crazy so that i was already low on air while everybody was still enjoying the view down at 20meters.

i told my DM that and he kept on giving me the OK sign even after my air was falling below 50 bar. we still came up with the rest of the divers with me having 10-15bar left in my tank.

the dive was too advanced for me (then), the current was strong, and it would have been a smart idea to come up earlier than the rest of them when i started getting worried about my air supply.
