I've read the threads on this topic but it seems like nothing has been posted about it since 2006. So, how's everyone doing with spouses that do not (and will not) dive with you? I know of a lot of places in FL to go, but what I'm the most curious about is what activities seem to occupy your non-diving spouse the most while you're below?

For those of you that frequent the FL Keys, what areas would you suggest that a non-diving spouse would enjoy most? Thanks in advance! :idk:

My spouse does not dive. Nor does she ski or sail or like to fly. That covers all MY expensive hobbies! She DOES like to go with me on these trips and she's perfectly content to sit there and read by the pool and just chilling out.

My biggest problem with that is that if I don't go somewhere with a group I may be a third buddy. Of course, I'm not bashful nor am I proud--I'll dive with just about anybody, once. After that, they'd better be pretty good. I won't dive with a suicidal fool for a buddy.

I just got my SSI OW and my wife does not know how to swim. I will be teaching her how to swim this summer, and then I will get her to try snorkle so she gets used to the idea of breathing under water. She told me that if she is able to feel comfortable in the water that she will try to do "the scuba thing" I am pretty sure that I will have a permanent dive budy for next year. Also the wife of my current budy is gonna do the course next summer so that helps me a lot. Lets see how that goes

That's funny! I guess I should have added that my wife & I also ride a motorcycle, and jet ski, and snorkel together of which she loves. I even got her to do the Hookah diving in Hawaii a couple of years ago, but full scuba is out of the question for her. Her main concern as I pursue this sport is that she will feel left behind, etc and it will become a sort of wedge eventually. I get it, but I'm not buying into it and have to find ways to keep her happy. I have researched and plan on trips where I can dive in the morning and we can snorkel together in the afternoon; such as diving with the manatees in Crystal River. What I'd really like to find is the areas in the Keys that she can snorkel directly above me while watching me dive around below- but also with sights that she can see while floating. Does that make sense?

Get a new one--life's way too short..........actually on 2nd thought, you will be able to do twice as much traveling/diving as one so-----keep her.........

No problem. just find a dive buddy with a non-diving spouse, and you and your buddy can go diving, and the wives can go shopping.

I will warn you that if you do this on any of the populated Caribbean islands, the jewellery stores charge way more than the dive boats. :D

On vacation, my wife is perfectly content to sleep late while I go out on the morning boat. Afternoons are spent touring and snorkeling, since she does snorkel. At home, she does whatever she would do even if I was home playing couch potato instead of going out diving :)

Well, it's beginning to look like it all comes down to this: (1) do the early morning dives so we have the rest of the afternoon together, and (2) find a dive buddy who's spouse is in the same boat (no pun intended). I recently told her, "Well honey, the boat is going to need someone to flip burgers for the rest of us when we surface!" :rofl3:

Those of you that are married know that did not go over well (giggle)

My wife does not dive. In fact, she gets sea sick just thinking about it. We use it for away time; much needed in my opion. Plus, it is only one boat fee, one set of equipement. She is fine with it. "Do what makes you happy". Not a guilt trip, but honest fellings. I love that woman.

Email the dive ops where you are going and see if they have a boat that will take snorkelers too. My hubby doesn't dive but he usually sleeps in and I go on early morning dives then join him for lunch. He gets a little crabby if I just dive, dive, dive but oh well, he'll get over it. Problem with that is that he remembers a trip where I dive more than he can sleep and then I have a hard time convincing him to go on another trip. This time I have to make sure there is golfing to keep him occupied.
I tried getting friends to dive, but it turned out that it was the guy friend that got certed and now if we go my hubby is stuck with the girlfriend and they don't like to do the same stuff. (the girlfriend tried diving and freaked out.) My only hope is to invite people who don't dive who can hang with my hubby and then I get to go diving.
