Hi, I need to replace my primary dive light (flooded through my carelessness) and am in need of a new one. I don't do much night diving. I mainly dive from BW/MacAbee & also will do boat dives (i.e. Escapade), so I mainly want something to cut through the silt and be bright enough for people to find me & vice versa and emergency signaling if need be.

I was wondering what do all of you use for your primary dive light? What are you likes & dislikes about it? And if possible, how much you paid. I want to spend <$400, but if I can get a decent LED canister for a bit more, then I'll consider it.

TIA.

I use a 10W HID canister light and it's plenty bright for our stuff. I went to Invade The Keys last year and used it on the night dive on the Eagle. Some people complained that it was too bright. :D

Diveriteexpress has an LED light on sale right now for $400. Looks like a good deal.

Thanks dannobee, I actually seriously considered this, but some people on this board were saying that the 500 lumens and the beam pattern may not be enough to shine through murkiness of BW. I'm hoping that some folks here will be able to agree/disagree on this...but it does seem like a sweet deal.

I dove my Halcyon Explorer 21 watt HID on Sunday at BW, the viz was 2 feet at best...

I however, attached the CAN light too far back to my plate and couldn't fire it on, it was a bouyancy test anyway...

Had I rigged it correctly that time I would have had great feedback for you. I will try again and give you my honest opinion...

I have seen Brandon use a HID a while back while at the Metridiums on a day that was murky, his light was awesome, very easy to spot and it broke through the murk.

Mike, I think one of us needs to go over gear configuration with you. The light should not be hard mounted to the backplate, but slipped onto the right hip harness.

When will you be diving next? I'd be glad to help you out.

Dan,

Seriously thanks for the offer, I will definetly take you up on the offer. My CAN light is not mounted on my backplate, I made the mistake of sliding it through the hip strap all the way back against the backplate. Then I secured it with an extra belt buckle so it would not move.

The mistake was I sent it back too far against the backplate and couldn't reach the switch. I posted on the DIR forum and they showed me how to correct the probelm using a Triglade.

Now the Triglade is 2 inches from the backplate and the CAN cannot go past it, this gives me the correct distance for reaching the switch.

I will try that in BW next week...

We have the Dive Rite LED 700, Dive Rite MR11 10W HID, and a Salvo 12W LED. None are these are awesome in Monterey - the Salvo 12W LED being the best of the bunch when you compare power, design and robustness.

Low viz conditions, the MR11 and Salvo 12W LED are good. I don't think that the LED 700 has that much punch, so I'd be amazed if the LED 500 has more.
