Ok... suggestions please. I used to have many dive buddies and when I lived near civilization it didn't seem complicated to find a few good ones. Now however I live quite remote and know NO local divers other than my family.

When my husband certified I was so sure we'd be a fun diving deo.. No way. He is an armed torpedo that just got a "big fish" blip on his internal sonar! He has become an underwater hunter.. while great he swims faster than I could possible keep up and is so "zoned" he isn't really aware i'm in the water and his reasoning skills go right out of his thought process. (yes, based on real dive situations, I'm talking from experience)

I on the other hand putter along the bottom and look at EVERYTHING! I'm still in love with the soft corals, sponges, small fishes, you name it. Let me near a wreck and I'm in heaven looking at every minute detail.

Needless to say we do NOT make good dive buddies.... any suggestions on find us good counterparts to dive Monterey?

Try Google:

"monterey diving"
"monterey scuba buddy"

that kind of thing. People organize their social networks online these days. Go find one or ask around at shops how you can network with local divers. They'll all tell you to come and dive with them but what's wrong with that? :)

A ScubaBoard Staff Message...

Moved to the NorCal forum. Help her out folks!

DiveMom, I simply post on the NorCal forum that I'm looking for a dive buddy on X day, and usually there will be at least one person who's available, or a duo willing to take on a third person.
Everyone here is really friendly, sure some people dive differently, but if you get exposure to 50 of them and find 10 you could regularly dive with, wouldn't that be great?
I meet everyone in Monterey, at Breakwater or Lover's, have met these people through here or the dive club out of Diver Dan's. Dive Club of Silicon Valley plans 1 shore dive and 1 boat dive per month, you don't have to go to the meetings (you may have to go to 1 of them though to pay your dues and sign up) and they release info on where they're diving over email.
NorCal divers also are a great group, no formal dive meetings, they organize camping/diving trips on the north coast. It's a website like this one.
It's a good idea to have your profile up to date so that people can match themselves to you, certfication level, number of dives, familiar with cold water, dive wet or dry, etc.
I haven't checked your profile so not sure if you've done that yet but I find that it's a good source of info if you're thinking about someone as a buddy.

Oh, there are lots of photographers that love to have dive buddies like you. It's hard to take pics when your buddy just wants to cover as much ground as possible. One of my best dive buddies isn't a photographer but she's great at finding things for me to take pics of. :D

We have Meet & Greet group dives in Monterey every couple months and that's a great way to meet new buddies. I heard a rumor that someone (Kathy?) might be organizing one soon, so keep your eye on the Norcal forum.

There is also a Meetup dive group that does regular group dives in Monterey, which would be another good way to meet other potential buddies. The Greater Bay Area Scuba Lovers Meetup (Santa Clara, CA) - Meetup.com

Let us know next time you plan to be in Monterey and I'm sure one or more of us will be available to dive with you.

We generally dive Monterey, CA and yes, it's a divers mecca. How do you "find" folks also looking for buddies? Maybe a sign on the back of the van "Dive Buddies Wanted" .. grin..

I am diving in Monterey, CA soon (Monterey Express 2 dives Sunday 25th of October and hopefully 2 dives Saturday afternoon if my plane is on time and they depart). Feel free to join us.

Darn!!! I got this too late to plan. Is there going to be a Nov. meet & greet? I'll be in Monterey next Fri, Sat, Sunday.. and would love to meet other divers. I could really use a dive buddy or two and would just enjoy meeting other divers.

I'm going next weekend to nail down my bouyancy issues and play with my camera. I have no problem spotting all the cool critters.. now I just need to learn to "capture" them on disc. LOL I'm toying with the idea of a practice night dive [without the camera] prepping for a wreck class soon. I'm still not totally comfy in low-no viz so will broach my phobia.
