Ok so having 8 dives under my belt lol I have been presented with many opportunities to go and try night diving. I know I am not certified for night diving yet but the people at my LDS tell me we can use that dive towards getting certified. I guess my question to all the night divers out there is how was your first time going down during night time? I would love to hear of those who when they tried it were shaking in their fins :( because that would most certainly be me. Tell me how did it feel jumping in and how things looked. Also any worries about running into something down there or getting disoriented.

I have gone in a cavern before and have used lights but nothing close to being out on a boat in the middle of the ocean in the pitch black sea lolol

Tell me things I would need to keep in mind that you have learned from night diving.

Thanks in advance for all the great advice SB members! :)

It ia normal to be a little worried but its great. Just make sure you go with people who know what they are doing.

Pitch black sea in florida? I think you'll be pleasantly suprised. All ocean night dives i've done we could turn our lights off and still have better vis than the normal high noon dive at the local quarry. Especialy if you've got any kinda moonlight. If you're realy worried try timing your 1st with a full moon. Plan your dive well and stick to it. Relax and have fun.

Well, I was nervous and wasn't sure I was doing it right...but I made it through..

I did my first Night Dive with similar experience. I was a little concerned but did it anyway! the question of would I do it again comes to mind. ABSOLUTELY!! Critters galore! On a darker side, I learned that my training was good when on that dive I got my reg ripped out of my mouth, got my mask kicked off and took a blow to the jaw all on the same dive by the same person! I'd still do it again. FANTASTIC

Talk with whoever you're going out with. See if they would be willing to do a couple things. First, dive the site during the day. This way you know what to expect. Second, see if they'd be willing to do a "transition" dive -- where you get in as the sun is setting and it's starting to get dark, but is not completely dark yet....then you'll be underwater when it truly becomes a night dive, but you'll already be comfortable having been there for the past 20 minutes or whatever.

Have fun on your first night dive! You'll be amazed at the different critters you see at night versus during the day. They're a lot of fun! Remember you're training, go with a good buddy, and have a great time :D

You'll love night diving. Some things are more common at night. My first night dive, there was luminesent algea or something in the water and as you swam a stream of glowing green particles streamed off of you. It was fantastic. Bring 2 lights :)

Had people tell me I'd use less air on my night dives, but I was nervous and didn't believe them....low and behold they were correct. There's so much to see that I kept occupied, was more relaxed, and had longer bottom time because I really did use less air. The night critters are fun and the coral is beautiful. So, I highly recommend you try it and I bet you'll want to include a night dive on all your future vacations...but I'm spoiled because I do my night diving in Cozumel :D

I did a moonless night boat dive in the pacific, and boy it was dark! If you start getting vertigo, bump the purge button on your reg, and watch the bubbles head up with your torch. If the reef is <40' it's not bad, but around blue water, things can get a little wonky. I love diving at night!! That's when alot of different fish come out.
