Interested to hear and see the results of his test. I think I will head over to DVinfo.net forums, to read up on the Blackmagic card. That board always has very knowledgeable members posting and testing equipment, software, etc..

Conch, I guess the key question is are their visual advantages to bringing previously recorded compressed video from the camcorder to the pc via HDMI over more traditional methods of tape and file transfers ??

Maybe one of the other scubaboard members with pro level experience will chime in. I think Perroneford and Billy work or have worked in the industry.

I finally got around to posting a vid.
It's from one of our dives in bali, i haven't changed anything just posted as shot with bits chopped out to make it shorter. I have about 10 hrs the same, but different!!!

My wife took the video, i'm on stills.
I think it shows how good this camera is in the hands of a 1st time amature.

I think that test video HDMI footage was live never compressed HDMI capture to his laptop computer.

Below is a post by Henry himself in the comments section of his HDMI capture tutorial vid.

Hi Jeff,
Absolutely - but it won't be very portable. You will just need the capture card if you are shooting to a desktop. There are many now but Blackmagic Design cards are supported by Cineform. You can capture pre-recorded material from the camera out of the HDMI port but you have already lost the quality. The advantage is only had when recording live to the computer.Once the codec has compressed the life out of your video - the damage has been done so you may as well use the USB cable to transfer material. Some say there is a slight advantage but I disagree.Live capture or don't bother.Take care

If you watch his tutorial vid you can see his exact process, which is a live capture to a small laptop.

Hi,
I have used the system a few times now and one thing i have noticed, is that it will not focus on a close up or macro shot when in underwater mode!
I have tried it in priority mode and it focuses all the way to the lens, i meen i was able to get close enough that the lens was touching the object i was filming and was still in focus.
When in underwater mode the closest i can get is 30-35cm, has anyone else noticed this and would a Inon UCL-330 macro lens fix the problem or should we just film in priority mode?

:sos:

Hi to all,
I use a reflex (olympus E-520)with external flash Inon D2000, but I would like tu buy a videocamera easy to use and not very big to carry underwater together with my reflex.
Do you think it is possible to manage easily the Wp-v1 and my reflex or it is to big ?
Sometimes I saw 30-40 mantas at a time and I would like to make a video (but my reflex can't do video).
Ciao

This is exactly what I was thinking in post #93. Unless by doing so you bypass the hardware encoder completely, there's no point in going to the trouble of capturing through HDMI. But encoding happens upon record, so there is no point using this workflow for recorded video. The bandwidth available for transfer of stored source data is irrelevant to the nature and quality of the source signal. And as with most image processing, my money would be on a good non-real-time software decoder being superior to a real-time hardware decoder.

All of this talk about capturing through HDMI only has to do with live feed, prior to being processed and stored on disk. Once stored, that's the only source data left, and anything that can be done to it in hardware and output through HDMI can be done entirely on the PC, whether you transfer it via HDMI, USB or floppy disk.

Re Gunsrunner

I have just enjoyed watching your video and was glad to finally see some reference to the fact that the focusing distance is altered in underwater mode. A fact that I have been unable to find any reference to in the Canon advertising literature, which had I known about prior would have changed my purchase of this camera or at least made for serious recalculations about the need to purchase extra equipment(ie filters, lights)

Does anyone who is using this canon wp-v1 video housing for the HF20 know if a standard Ikelite tray will fit on this housing in order to attach an Ikelite pro-v8 light? If not does anyone know of a tray that will attach to this housing that will enable me to attach my pro-v8? Thank you.

I posted this question in the Underwater Photography forum recently, and have also written to Ikelite asking them the same thing. In the end, it sounds like they're pretty much the same thing, with the main difference being that the Inon can mount to an accessory dome that gives you even wider coverage.

I have a WP-V1 with the HF200 and took it to Bonaire last August. I'm in the market for a wide angle lens as well. I've used a Sea & Sea 16mm adapter salvaged from my Nikonos with my Olympus SP-350, but this vignettes terribly with the WP-V1 housing.

Inon's website shows demos of their lens in use and the degree of image degradation towards the outer edges -

INON VideoBase V1

but I don't know if anyone has done a side-by-side comparison of the optics for Inon with Ikelite and Epoque. Anyone have experience with more than one of the lenses? Any comments on whether vignetting is a problem with any of them?

Thanks,

Mike

Yes, i think you could handle both at a push, if you had a couple of retractors to pull it back against you.
But i would think seriously about upgrading your camera to something that can do both, there are some pretty good camera/video's now!!:)

I have tried an Inon macro lense above water and it made about 10cm difference. We or should i say my wife has decided to go wide angle instead. I recorded a couple of vid's in priority mode and fixed the colour while editing, turned out good close-up shots!

I dont know about the ikelite, but it does have a standard tripod mount on the bottom that most trays would fit, or you could try this!!
