Some more photos clearly showing the Ady Gil approaching too close at high speed (look at the bow out of the water, and the wake)

Here we can see the rope deployed to disable the whaling vessel

Anyone who thinks the Ady Gil were blameless in the collision needs to look at these and have another think.

Ok so your providing non-time stamped photos as evidence of the incident. These could have been taken 3 hours before the collision. None of the videos available provided by sea shepherds or others show a wake coming from Ady Gill.

23 straight posts in the same thread in ~19 hours and still going? Is there any record keeping for this kind of streak?

14 in 14 seems to be the current second place.

They were taken before the collision. They clearly demonstrate reckless and dangerous behavior from the Ady Gill.

Erm, yes they do. The wake is clearly visible at all times, and it is also very clear the Ady Gill accerelates about 15 seconds into the video taken from the whaling ship.

I hope you understanding the group of people you are trying to convince on this board. If i had to take a guess about 99% of the people on this forum are going to say the whalers shouldn't be there to begin with.

The majority of us would be more then happy to sink the whalers ourselves if we had the chance.

I did notice you completely ignored my request for some form of positive scientific result that has come from the years of whaling and killing of thousands of Minke Whales.

If any of this group of people can come up with a rational, objective reason for the whalers not being there then I'll agree with them.

I've asked a fair few people who disagree with whaling to provide evidence to support their claims yet not one has done so yet:

I made no claims as to the usefulness of the research - I suspect the majority is far too technical for a layman like myself to understand. I simply posted the links to disprove those people who were claiming there was no research at all.

Quite clearly this is untrue, as there are dozens of articles in a variety of peer-reviewed scientific journals.

I hope this addresses your point.

Addressed perfectly. Since you have absolutely no idea of my scientific background saying something along the lines of its to technical for a layman to understand is just a simple way of saying I elect not to answer the question.

Yes I agree there is research being done. What is being contested is the usefulness of said research. I think its fairly safe to say we can both agree even as layman that if there was no profit in the "research" it would no longer be conducted. Since there has been no profit from the the research itself the only profit being earned is on the sale of the meat obtained in the name of research. Maybe Im wrong here maybe the japanese are immune to the world wide finical problems and can afford to spend money on research that results in no results year after year. :idk:

First I'm very glad no one got seriously hurt since I value human lives as much as animal ones.

Also glad the SS ship is a total loss. A new wreck to dive :D What comes around...

someone got broken ribs out of it

thanksforallthefish makes an excellent point about perspective. I watched the video again, this time looking for clues regarding relative positioning.

When you watch the CNN video, closely watch the relationship between the waves in the foreground and the Ady Gil in the distance. Using your peripheral vision, watch the action in the background.

Here is what I saw:

The ship taking the video appears to be relatively stationary throughout the video. It seems clear that the Shonan Maru definitely makes a radical turn towards the Ady Gil.

The Ady Gill appears to be almost dead in the water for most of the video. When you compare the CNN video to the video shot from the Shonan Maru, this is confirmed. If you look at the wake of the Ady Gil in the Japanese video, the Ady Gil is not really moving (there is almost no wake).

At the last second before being rammed, the Ady Gil appears to accelerate and pull forward slightly. Again, looking at the video shot from the Shonan Maru, you can see that just before the ramming the Ady Gil accelerates and develops a wake. You can even see the wake develop in the CNN video.

As the Ady Gil accelerates forward, the Shonan Maru makes a correction to port to ram the Ady Gil that is moving to it's port side.

After the Shonan Maru rams the Ady Gil, the Shonan Maru keeps turning to port.

I think it's important to view both the CNN video and the video from the Shonan Maru to fully understand what happened. Pay partucular attention to the wake of the Ady Gil during the entire encounter, especially in the video shot from the Shonan Maru.

In the Japanese video, it appears that the Ady Gil is, in fact, driving in front of the Shonan Maru. However, when you look at the wake of the Ady Gil you realize that the Ady Gil is dead in the water. The CNN video makes it clear that it is the Shonan Maru that is turning to ram the Ady Gil.

I am not sure why the Ady Gil suddenly accelerated just before being rammed. Could be the last-minute "Oh, S&%#" act of a captain who didn't know what to do when he realized that he was about to be rammed. I am sure Geoff will claim that the Ady Gil accelerated in order to be rammed by the Shonan Maru.

If I were the skipper of the Ady Gil and realized that a large ship has just turned onto a collision course, I would have accelerated, too. But I would have also turned the Ady Gil to starboard at the same time that I accelerated. Look at the relative speed of the two vessels. The Ady Gil was basically dead in the water and didn't stand a chance. By the time the Ady Gil captain decided to accelerate, the Shonan Maru was moving too fast and bearing down too quickly.
