Im looking to start ice diving and I'm looking for a good lake/pond thats frozen over somewhere in CT. Preferably eastern CT, Western RI or Southeast Mass. Any suggestions?

There's not much frozen now that's deep enough to dive. If it gets really cold for a week or so you might check out Beach Pond on the RI CT line off of Route 165. The access if easy from either the RI side or the CT side via the boat ramp. It's around 30' deep and the water is clear probably clearer when it's cold and frozen over. PM me about it if you'd like.

Mr X, I'm assuming he already got his ice diving certification and is just looking for a place now to practice his new ice diving skills as he has also invested in all the proper gear and has gathered the proper dive crew for support.

The AAUS is a tough certification to get and it may cover ice diving to a degree; but from what I hear, ice diving does require special procedures, equipment, and backup support.

ScubaSaurus: I too would assume thta he's got all of the required training but wonder if his buddy and surface support is similarly qualified.

Cheers Scubasarus....didn't see info in his stats. indicating prior training. As a tech instructor + ice...just never know who's asking for info. and whether there was appropriate training. As many of you know things can go bad real fast under the ice.

I'm of the belief the ice diving cert. acquired by a weekend of ice diving is more or less a certificate that shows one performed an ice dive rather than a certificate that clears one to go out and perform ice diving on one's own even with a crew and the proper gear. There is much more to safe ice diving that what can be taught in a weekend IMO.

Can't agree more Mr X

I believe my buddy had about 5 divers in his class and each and everyone of them had a gear malfunction requiring immediate removal from the water via the life line. With such a high percentage of gear malfunctions, I would assume one needs more than a weekend of experience let alone training for safe ice diving without an ice diving instructor.

When you have to cut a hole in the surface of the water with a sharp tool, in order to dive, that is God's sign to "keep out"!
Bowlofpetunias

When you can walk on the surface of deep snow, you know it's COLD.
When you can walk on the surface of deep water, you know it's Real Cold.
When you cut a hole in the surface of that water to dive, you know it's been cold TOO LONG!
me

100 % agree. The weekend cert. is a souvenir that's says I did it...and probably won't be doing it again in the near future :D

Cheers,

Actually, if one go back in time, ice diving certification was done during a weekend. When that is said it is also a question about the divers qualification and experience. When having cold water divers who is used to dive among ice in the open sea due to there is no full icefree areas during wintertime, yes you can arrange a weekend course. The main thing will then be to teach the main security and all the backup solutions that can be provided to diver under ice overhead conditions.
