I can't wait. Thanks to all on this board who have share their tips, advice, and photos. Keep them coming. Let's post to this thread to keep it at the top instead of the negative threads that keep getting bumped to the top.

MaineDiver- Have a great time. We're still at 400+ days till we get to go, so i'm going to live vicariously through you. (and others going during that time)

I look forward to your post trip report and lots of pictures.

Have fun, be safe and enjoy your trip!

Dennis

Join SB date ,January 4 2010, and less than 24 dives. Interesting. Is it safe to say you've never been to Bonaire? If all you hear is "happy talk" about Bonaire is that, in YOUR estimation, being fully informed before heading to Bonaire?

Dennis, you have just 20 posts on SB and 12 of them, that's more than half, are dedicated to Bonaire? Very interesting indeed. Curious?

PF... I'm sure that MaineDiver has seen all of your posts about how unsafe Bonaire is.

That being said... The post title says "let's talk Bonaire happy talk" Go bust on Bonaire on one of your other threads.

did your research... Joined under this name on that date. VERY GOOD. Yes never been to Bonaire.

However if you were to do MORE research...My wife's user name which I used is I'maDorkFish. We've been members on this board since late 2006/early 2007. True we don't have many dives logged. but that doesn't mean we aren't world travelers.

AGAIN... lets keep this thread ON TOPIC as the poster requested... G

Go bash in your other anti Bonaire threads

Thanks, and have a nice day

Hi Dennis, where are you staying? we will be at Sanddollar. I am about ready to jump out of my skin waiting the 12 days. I love all the pictures that get posted on this site. I'm hoping all the good people will post more to keep the excitement going. I'll be sure to post a trip report and pictures if I can figure out the picture part.

Hey Maine Diver, You are going to have a wonderful time diving Bonaire! Since you're staying at Sand Dollar and Bari Reef will be your "home" reef, I'll speak a bit to that. For whatever reason, many folks who dive Bari always go straight out from the dock (toward Klein), then drop down the wall. If you go left toward Eden Beach over the sand flats, I think you'll find yourself rewarded with a lot of rubble to look through, and a more dramatic wall. There is an amazing amount of juvenile fish in the rubble on the sand flats, so take your time coming and going from the wall.

Last summer we were treated to a huge bait ball of silversides that were being "herded" and hunted by tarpon on four different occasions. We must have spent a good 15 minutes or more in 10 feet of water in front of the dock watching the tarpon work the bait ball. We were amazed at the number of divers who just swam by us to exit and missed such a spectacular sight.

We've been to Bonaire for 2 weeks each time the past two summers (and will return this summer), and Bari Reef has always been our last dive of the day (we stay at Den Laman). It is ever changing, we never got bored, and will likely do the same thing again this summer. :)

If you have time, consider taking a 1/2 day course with Jerry Ligon at Bonaire Dive and Adventure. It is WELL worth your time and you'll see things you wouldn't likely find yourself. If you're a photographer, consider spending 1/2 day working with Tim at Fish Eye Photo. He's an excellent photographer and teacher and really made a huge difference in my husband's photography (and my editing abilities). Also, if you want to dive some of the less dived sites up in the park, consider doing Buddy Dive's 3-tank (all day) charter up there. That's something we're really looking forward to doing this summer as it's a new trip and we've been wanting to dive up there.

If you're going to need any internet time, go see Michael at Chat 'n Browse right in front of Sand Dollar. And if you have room in your luggage, take him a can of Folger's regular blend coffee...he can't get it on island. And definitely make sure Lover's Ice Cream is on your list of places to go. Yum!! Very good ice cream, and they even make sugar free that's good!!

For dive sites, don't be afraid to go pretty far south to Margate Bay, Atlantis, and Vista Blue. Great sites, very lush with soft sponges, fans, and corals. If you haven't already, buy a copy of Bonaire Shore Diving Made Easy anywhere on the island, it's a great guide to the sites and we found it to be essential on our first trip. :)

Sorry you'll be there during cruise ship season, I understand driving through Kralendijk is a pain where there are ships in port. Hopefully you can check the cruise ship schedule and be able to plan a bit around them, avoiding them as much as possible. (There aren't cruise ships there in the summer when we go, so we have no experience with them on Bonaire).

If you're interested (and haven't stumbled across it here), here's a link to our website that has trip reports and photos from our 2 trips to Bonaire. Just hit the Bonaire tab on the top and scroll down. http://divetraveladventures.site.shutterfly.com/

You know everything about keeping safe from all the other threads, so no comments from me on that. Have a GREAT time!

Maine, That hasn't been offically decided yet. We are going to the Our World Underwater show next weekend and will be talking with the different resorts there. Looks like Buddy Dive and the Plaza are the front runners. We definately are going to stay at one of the larger "resorts" for safety Issues (we're well informed as well)

Planning a trip over a year in advanced STINKS!!! Right now its Research research research.

As far as pictures go... We use photobucket.

We are booked for the 1/2 day photo course with Tim at Fish Eye and also to do a video shoot dive. We booked a 3 guided dive day with Bas and also the UV night dive with him. My buddy has his own camera but I will be renting one. I'm hoping to buy after having tried what tim has for rent. We may take Jerry's course, not sure yet. I don't want every minute scheduled. I want to enjoy the freedom of diving when we want and where we want.

Diver DennisP, check out Den Laman for somewhere to stay as well. Although it isn't a "large" resort, all the condos (except 1) are on the 2nd and 3rd floors with a key needed to get access to the stairs. The doors into the individual condos are arranged around the central staircase, and being that everything is very open and tiled, any noise is amplified considerably. I can't imagine anyone being able to break into a room without everyone in the place knowing about it! The condos also have huge verandas, providing a lot of space to have gear drying outside. There's also security out front at night and the parking lot is lit up like a stadium! Because of that, I recommend an ocean-front room instead of one of the studios!

If you don't care about being ocean-front, check out Golden Reef Inn. They've put in amazing security measures to keep their rooms safe, have video surveilance, and have a good location near the main road.

Sounds like you pretty much have things covered for your first trip!! Can't blame you for not wanting to schedule every minute, and I'm thinking spending the day with Bas will be just as good as time spent with Jerry. Bas knows his stuff and everyone raves about him!

Tim rents Sea&Sea DX-1G point and shoot cameras (at least that's what he had last year). If you like the camera, I'd really encourage you to buy the DX-2G as it has a few upgraded features from the DX-1G, and is a bit faster. That's what my husband upgraded to last year and you can really see the difference between the DX-2G and the DX8000G if you look at our Bonaire shots then compare them to the Maui, 2009 pictures.
