I am attempting to plan a trip for late June to Bonaire. We are currently considering the PADI specials for dive and drive. It comes with travel, accommodations, truck rental, 6 1 tank boat dives. Looking for feedback on is this the best choice..We are not looking for anything fancy, just a bunch of dives.

Is it best to do a package or ala carte?

Looking for good location, charter boat for boat dives, vehicle rental...

Thanks!!

I'm not familiar with the "PADI specials" of which you speak.
But generally yes, it's best to do a package deal, especially for first-time Bonaire visitors.
Check out various dive packages at bonairepros.com to get an idea.
And don't pay for too many boat dives up front.
My last two trips, I just did all shore diving...

What about air travel..I am struggling to find a flight. Is that uncommon?

You might be crowding up against a 4th of July peak in air travel. Also, air service to Bonaire is slightly limited. There always seems to be flights getting dropped and airlines discontinuing serve. Delta has flights through Atlanta, while Continental has service through Newark and Houston.

Here's a website describing your options:

If you wait too long, or to close to departure date it can be hard. Also you may need to check from different airports. Try using Expedia.com to search for flights.

Allthough I have an international airport an hour and a half away, we have got much better deals driving to another airport three hours away.

I have stayed at Buddy Dive twice and was happy with the operation. It has everything you need, plus free nitrox. I also agree that the boat dives are not that big a deal on Bonaire. If you get six one tank boat dives, try to do three two tank dives instead, then spend the rest of time shore diving.

How close are you to Miami? Look at Insel Air flights from there to Bonaire. I don't think Insel shows up on the big booking sites.

In addition to BonairePros, try calling Caradonna dive travel, they just put together a group rate at Buddy Dive for another group here. I think it was around $700 for everything except air.

I'd double up the boat dives also - it's easy to do two good dives before 11AM leaving you free to shoredive in the afternoons. Except for Rappel most of the other good boat dives are at Klein Bonaire so if you stay at one of the north dive resorts (Buddy Dive, Capt. Don's Habitat, Sand Dollar Condos, Den Laman or Eden Beach) you'll be just across the channel from Klein.

I agree with TheWizard, I'd pre-pay for a few boat dives and add them as desired. One afternoon we paid $18 for a dive out to Forest (Klein Bonaire) Just us, a Dutch couple and the DM. Nice, long, unhurried dive at a great site. If you do too many boat dives with the same outfit, they sometimes do a shore-accessible dive to take you somewhere different each day. We dove Witches Hut coming back from Rappel on the boat one morning, the next day we drove right by it.

I prefer the package deals but do the reservations myself, no need to involve a second party. I know for a fact that Den Laman has a studio open...I just released it. Bonaire Resorts, Bonaire Dive Resort - dive packages and information Nice place and you are welcome to come hang with us if this is your first trip to Bonaire.

Air is not hard, you have 4 basic options, the Continetal redeye via Houston or Newark (realize this is an overnight flight so the leave date is the day before you arrive- that is a common mistake- is ), Delta out of Atlanta, Insel Air out of Miami or catch anyairline to Curacao and grab an island hopper to Bonaire. I never use any of the online all inclusive sites like Hotwire, instead go directly to the airline and book directly with them.

I have to agree that you might consider not pre-booking the boat dives and instead do them ala carte. We made the mistake (for us) of prepaying for boat dives on our first trip and wound up doing only 1....making it very expensive. We felt the boat dives took too much time and preferred to shore dive instead, though we did think the dive on Klein was very nice though.

On our second trip the only boat dive we did was with East Side Divers, and on our third trip this summer, we plan to do a 3-tank Washington Park charter with Buddy Dive. All other diving will strictly be shore diving as it is easy and convenient.

Like Herman, we stay at Den Laman, but honestly you can't go wrong with Buddy, Capt Don's, Golden Reef Inn, Sand Dollar, Divi, Bellefonte, The Plaza, etc,. etc.....

Just got back from 2 weeks at Buddy Dive, trip report forthcoming, but I digress. Being a professional number cruncher and desk jockey, I wondered if the all inclusive price (transfer to/from airport, 1 bedroom condo, 6 boat dives, unlimited nitrox, truck rental and breakfast) was worth it. Long/short given all things equal we paid about the same to stay right on the water with the above amenities as we would had we rented a private home in a nice community and paid for everything separately. Actually Buddy Dive all inclusive had a slight edge - maybe $150 per person/week - and everything was coordinated for us. I didn't have to drive to boats, pick up rental car, etc. I love the convenience of being right on water, gear storage, 24 hr access to tanks.

I like boat dives for the access to Klein and some northern sites not accessible by land. I find a morning boat dive, 1 or 2 beach dives and a late afternoon/night dive right from resort dock works best for me. While I love beach diving, it gets messy and I get beat up. Interspersing boat and resort dives breaks it up and not quite so taxing on my old self!

Air to Bonaire is limited, regardless of where you are coming from.

If you are a first timer, consider doing the package thing from one of the bigger resorts, get the lay of the land and make a deterimination for future trips.

Dive Maven - did the 3 tank Park dive - great trip! Strongly suggest doing it.

Ok...Thanks to all...here are our plans to date and questions that we still have...

1) Airline Tickets done
2) Accomadations - GRI or similar
3) Determine number of boat dives once on site

Questions remaining:

1) Can you dive the first day there, with 3:00 pm arrival?

2) How many tanks can you have out at once?
