I'm thinking about switching my Air 2 for a bungee necklace octo. This is way down the road and I'd like to get some feed back on the hose length.

I've heard that the usual length for this setup is 22in. I've seen hoses (strictly hoses for sale) that are 18in and I was wondering if that is way to small for anyone. Is there are any draw backs to having a short hose.
If the 18in hose allows me to have a full range of head movement is there anything I should really worry about?

I'm about 5'6" 110lbs. Kinda a small guy with small shoulders in comparison to others my height.

Hi there,

The standard length for a back up reg hose on a bungee necklace is 22-24". I dive 24" on my doubles and shorter on my singles rig.

Where do you live in No Cal? Plenty of us around the Monterey area dive this equipment conf. If you'd like to meet up and take a look at our equipment set up, just drop me a PM

Thanks Kathy,
I'm in Santa Cruz
I may just take you up on your offer when I get back from my time in the snow. ;]

With the hose length for a singles set up. Should the hose bow out near the edge of your shoulder at all?

Did you mean that the Octo hose length will be 22in.? Isn't that WAY too short?
Yes that's what we ment. The idea is to donate your primary and take the octo for yourself. Which is kept on a bungee necklace around your neck. If you have it set right you don't even need hands to put it in your mouth =D

I dive 24 on singles and 22 on doubles, 22 is short for singles for me when i turned my head left there was tension and pulled on octo.

No as g1138 said, it's a different hose configuration. Your backup is your personal regulator and very accessable. You donate your primary. Here are some pictures: Equipment Configuration | Global Underwater Explorers

Thanks Kathy,
I'm currently between Santa Cruz and the east bay depending on school holiday etc.

There a couple of guys in the scientific dive program at Santa Cruz who just took Fundies and are diving this set up. Perhaps it would be easier for you to connect with them.

Or I'd be happy to show you my equipment in the new year - enjoy the snow :)!

Then your primary should be on a longer hose (42in or so) to allow for maneuverability and control?

It can be a std length or as long as 9ft depending on your pref. or requirements for a dive.
I've already done air shares using my primary for my buddy (std length hose; never measured it) and my Air2 for myself.
It works well enough. My one problem is that it's a lot of tension on my mouth because of the hose, and when I'm not using it it drags below me. Which isn't a problem normally because I swim with my hands tucked, but when I'm using torches or slates I can't always do this. =\

Haha I actually know one of those guys. Were you talking about aquaregia?
I took sci dive with him. I was actually thinking about asking him if I could borrow his reg the next time I TA for the basic OW @ UCSC xD

Here is a good video that shows how the primary is donated:
