You were the person who started discussion about the prevelance of human cannibalism vesus shark attacks/bites. I was curious if your comments were based on any factual information.

Yes my comments were based on factual data. I used Wikipedia for the cannibalism data and the shark attack data came from wikipedia, FLMNH and 3rd-party analysis of that data.

I'm far more worried about bleeding to death in a ditch with the screams of my children in my ears because somebody sexting on their I-Phone drifted over the median, careening into my car sending me out of control into a light pole on my way to the beach than I am about being eaten by a shark while diving or snorkeling.

Yeah same here. But you did say far more worried, so I guess you're at least a little worried about sharks? I know, semantics and just splittiong hairs, as I tend to do.

LOL, I guess, but not in any real sense. The chances of being hurt are so small it isn't worth worry. There is so many other things to worry about in life and sharks aren't one. But sharks aren't seen here either, maybe if I was diving in another location I'd worry more.

Can't argue with any of that.

We've seen our share of sharks in Little Cayman, Belize and elsewhere, and seek them out whenever possible. I'm a firm believer in not messing with the wildlife, however, and have no interest in shark feeding dives. My daughter did have a minor scuffle during a dive in Little Cayman, but it was with a Nassua grouper. Totally unprovoked, although once again I believe that the Nassau grouper in the Cayman Islands have become too diver habituated. They have been petted, rubbed under the chin, follow divers like dogs and recently have been fed lionfish frequently (although this activity has been subsequently stopped IIRC).

There is a reason that you don't feed bears in the woods. I wrote about the incident here: http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/near-misses-lessons-learned/349261-grouper-attack.html and the story is accompanied by a photgraph taken at the onset of the attack.

This has not prevented my daughter and I from enjoying diving; we both still seek out sharks whenever possible, although she will NOT transit any swim through if she sees a Nassau grouper hanging out inside, lol.

OMG, I've never heard of this shark species before, and this thread seems like a good spot to put a video... CREEPY!! It's like "Alien" is living in there!!

A fellow student tried to bite my fingers off in the old days of buddy B̶r̶e̶e̶d̶i̶n̶g̶ breathing. Totally unprovoked.
