I was wondering about the current market for single tank wings myself.
I'm getting ready to start up operations with the Freedom Plate once again and will need current info on wings and harnesses.
We need to start a comprehensive single tank donut wing thread that can be turned into a sticky complete with lift capacities, outer dimensions, inner dimensions, slot placement with measurements, etc.
I used to recommend Oxychec Mach V's but I've been out of it for a while and don't know if they're even relevant anymore.
I've looked at HOG wings online and they seem like they would work with my plate.
The highland cam bands look pretty cool with the opening buckle.

I'm going to need to order a wing and some accessories for a prototype so I'll be following this thread.

I found a used Dive Rite Venture EXP does anybody know if thats a good wing. Any advice is welcome
buddhasummer:
I thought the Venture EXP was a 16lb wing, no?
The Venture EXP is a 45 lb wing.

Personally, I think it is a bit on the large side for single cylinder diving, even in a dry suit. I would stay closer to a 35 lb unit. It is my understanding that the Venture is no longer offered by Dive Rite, but new and used units are still available online. I would be reluctant to go with a used Venture unless it was a VERY good price (<=$100).

I think the Mach Vs are still very relevant. Nice wings (I wish we were an Oxycheq dealer, so wearing them could be considered 'shop brand' diving).

Like I said, I've been out of the scene for a few years and now I'm seeing that there are several other brands and styles out there to choose from.
I know that Oxycheq at one time had the market cornered in single tank donut wings to some degree with their Mach V, but I'm wondering if anyone has surpassed them with any new innovations.

My criteria is the wing has to be a full donut, it has to have slots, and it has to have a 360 zipper or at least a way to access the inner bladder for DIY field repairs.
It also has to have a model range from 18 to 20 lb. lift to around 40 lb. lift.

I have been using a HOG 32# singles wing for around four years now and like it very much. With that said I would like to have a narrower profile similar to the Mach V. My HOG is the old design and still looks new with no ware spots visible. If I had to purchase a new wing I might go with an Oxycheq, due to the price increase in the new HOG wings there is only around a $30 difference between the two now. Oxycheq is not known for there stellar customer service so I would suggest purchasing from a reputable shop as service from the manufacturer is nearly non existent.

That's part of the problem, Oxycheq's customer service.
That's also a problem for dealers.
If dealers have trouble getting the manufacturer to back up their products then it's not worth it to the dealer if they know they're going to lose money. This may not be a huge problem with stuff like wings since most of the accessories on a wing are generic like inflators and dump valves and bladder repairs can be done in house, but it does become a problem with things like lights and electronic devices.

To the OP: I recommend a Deep Sea Supply 32 or 35 pound wing. I do this because Tobin George will walk you through a whole set of calculations, to make sure you are getting the wing that works for YOU. Some people find that irritating, but it does ensure that you don't make mistakes like the Venture wing. DSS also stands behind their products -- everything is made in house, and the owner has direct quality control on the manufacturing.

I put up a picture a while back of a pair of DSS wings that, between them, had over 3000 dives (and no, I haven't added a zero). The stuff lasts.

I have a Halcyon Infinity 18lb & 26lb, both purchased used. My experience with STA-less wings has been bad, and I always use an STA or weighted STA. I second the recommendation for the Ultimate wing lift calculator here on the forum, very useful.

Can you name wing models and your experience, please. I've been diving a 'STA-less' wing (both wet and dry) and have had absolutely no problems. Curious what problems you've had.

Like my Oxycheq's 18" & 40", the smallest for Alutanks and warm water diving. My wife is not happy with her Hollis 38". It's much bulkier and bigger. I feel much less "drag" diving the Oxy's- escpecially with the 18" and the travelplate. Until now, I've dived with the Alu backplates from Hollis(light), because my webbing is attached to it...to much hassle changing it to the travelplate.... I use a STA, but it's not necessary with the Oxycheq Mach V's.

First of all a 38 is kinda big for singles. I use a 23 for al 80's (HOG) and 32 for steels up to LP 95's. I have both the old and new style HOG 32's and the newer red and black is a bit narrower than the old one. The 23 is really narrow. I don't have time ot measure them right now as I have a class to get ready for but might be able to do that this weekend. And I'll get all the other dimensions as well. Slots, spacing, etc. they both have 360 degree zippers and the new ones have ten year warranties on the bladder against pinch flats due to their ballistic material construction. Not urethane.

I use all of them without an STA and have never had a stability issue. I also had a DSS wing before switching and it did not require an STA and never felt the need for one.
