I am going to buy myself a new knife ready for the New Year. Decided I want Titanium over steel.

My main question is whether I should go for a blunt tipped model or a "regular" sharp tipped.

I was wondering what the respective pros and cons of each type.

Anyone here got some thoughts to share?
Thx

blunt tip is easier to use as a screwdriver, harder to accidentally cut, or more specifically, stab yourself or your gear with. That said, I only carry pointed. I got my first knife at 5, cut/stabbed myself probably hundreds of times as a kid, learning the hard way how to handle a knife, but by now I just feel like a blunt tip would be limiting a knife's otherwise normal capabilities. The odds of ever needing to stab something down there are like as slim as hitting the lotto, but people keep hitting it. Better to have and not need... IMO

Carry two !

Then you have redundancy and also can put them in different places on your kit so you can reach them even if partially tangled or restricted. I have blunt tipped 4" Titanium knife on my belt, and a pointed tipped 4" steel on my BCD inflator hose. I also have a z knife flat against one of the webbing straps, so I should always be able to reach a cutting tool no matter what orientation I am in, or whether or not I am tangled in anything. - Phil.

So people choose what style of knife tip based on the possibility of fighting off sharks with the knife. Can anyone please provide data on life saving under water knife fights with sharks.

Pointed. You don't have to fight off killer sharks with one; just stabbing your buddy and leaving them for the sharks to finish off will give you time to escape. Blunt tips are no use for that.

LOL. Most astute!

Pointy is clearly the way to go. I think that this is the best diving knife for the job. Promate's a pretty solid brand.

Thanks for your input!

I carry a sharp point knife. Knowing how to handle and use it are a plus. Another up side for a pointed knife is it is a whole lot cooler looking clenched between your teeth when you surface!!!!!:D

All of my dive knives are blunt tip. A knife is a tool. Pointed tips can break, accidentally poke a hole in a suit, your, or other gear. If I want to have an actual bladed weapon underwater I'll just strap my Katana across my back.
As for the stabbing your buddy to fend off sharks. Bad move. The knife could get stuck as you try to yank it out. Slashing them works much better:wink:.
