I only use my pointy tip knife if lionfish hunting, to kill the little bugger by stabbing through his head. Otherwise, a small blunt tip is the way to go, if you want a knife. I find z-cutters and shears more generally useful, for example if clearing mono-filament fishing line off a reef.

So people choose what style of knife tip based on the possibility of fighting off sharks with the knife. Can anyone please provide data on life saving under water knife fights with sharks.

The data can be found in any encyclopedia. Studies have also proven a direct correlation to the style of knife choice and ability to recognize humor.

OK, I get that having a line cutting tool is a great idea, just in case. But other than cleaning up some discarded fishing line tangled in the coral, I've never had a use for a knife under water. Examples of practical intended use please. BTW, in the Caribbean most of the really good dive sites are protected marine parks and won't allow knives.

As for the stabbing your buddy to fend off sharks. Bad move. The knife could get stuck as you try to yank it out. Slashing them works much better:wink:.

This is the kind of useful safety information I joined Scubaboard for.

I thought I recognized you in that! You were the guy in orange. Or black.

I'm clumsy and absent minded with a history of dropping things. Blunt tip for me. I use a Spyderco Salt 1, if memory serves; the H1 steel doesn't rust, so it's like titanium in that respect. Trying to track down a good comparison of H1 vs. Titanium otherwise didn't work out for me, but the Spyderco H1's are very popular. I think I paid $60 & change on Amazon for it.

My backup cutting tool is a Trilobyte; very low profile, easy to forget it's there unless needed, then easily deployed.

Richard.

Pointy... There are flounder everywhere here in the panhandle. Easier to stab and put on a stringer with a sharpie knife.

I'd go with trauma shears.....they cut anything....including your buddies drysuit during deco.
