I'm a Fish!
...was wondering if I need to equip the Missuss with a full-length 3mm wetsuit for snorkelling due to the presence of jellies.

Thing is, the Missus is a VERY nervous snorkeller - she will not leave the surface, and she really likes to wear a life vest while snorkelling in water she cannot stand in ( she also maintains a vice-like grip on my bicep, often impeding blood flow thru the brachial artery! ). As her ever-attentive guide, I will try to steer her clear of all floating stingers, but I'm thinking that the skin protection & extra flotation afforded by the 3mm might work to keep her in the water longer. This is my 1st Roatan trip, thus am unfamiliar with the jellies situation...

I'd get her a lycra skin. Protects against sunburn and jellies for a 3rd the cost/bulk.

We were there a month later (1st week of May) and never saw any.

I dive in shorts/t-shirt so I'm pretty alert when someone mentions jellies. No one did on any of our boat dives on either side of the island.

Not in West Bay though, 2 miles over in the West End.

If you want to go over there to snorkel, try the west side of Half Moon Bay Beach - it's pretty shallow snorkeling. From the dock here: Hotel in Roatan, Honduras. The best place for diving and snorkeling The water taxi will either drop you there or about 100 yds. away. Most days we saw people snorkeling there as we rode by nearby to go dive.

The bay area just steps away from our resort is considered as one of the best places in the world to practice snorkeling;
relax and enjoy the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean Sea and admire the marine animal and plant life

Thanks Steve - I had thought of the skin option, but the extra buoyancy & warmth of a 3 mil might be the ticket.

Methinks I will let her decide; undoubtedly, she'll want both options! Ah well, what-price-happy-wife, eh?

I used to be the same nervous snorkler, I have logged 600+ dives. I owe it to my Intro to Scuba instructor, Warren Vanderbilt in Maui. The 3mm will offer her warmth for prolonged snorkeling, the skin is just protection.
 
My wife, now with some 300 dives (quite a few with k8brandt above) started out her dive life as a super-panicked 'norkeler, exactly as you describe.

I see that you are listed as an Instructor. The best thing you can do for her is to give her completely over to another chosen local instructor. Have them get her comfortable, have them nudge her into floating on the surface (that 3 mil will surely do that) and sucking off the long hose. Her life will change forever.

Never teach your wife to drive manual shift, shoot pistols, or fly aircraft. That and SCUBA. Just doesn't work all that well.

While I appreciate your comments, I can assure you my dear Missuss has no desire to dive, but she does enjoy watching the antics of the marine critters below from her perch on the surface. The more comfortable I can make her there, the greater her enjoyment will be ( and the easier time of it I will have! ).

Over my years of teaching divers I've had my share of uber-nervous folks, but they all shared one thing in common - a strong determination to dive. It is unwise to attempt to make a diver out of someone who has no interest; additionally, it is wrong for a spouse to feign an interest in diving just to please their spouse. As a wise ol' diver once said: "Where there's a will, there's a way; where there isn't, there ain't!"

I've never seen or felt any jellies around IB but I've only been there 3 times. (Jan, June, and June). I felt a few of those tiny ones up by AKR, on a dive but that was once and was minimal.
