Wow! Are you for real? Could you honestly write anything negative about Cochran without risking your job? The fact that you're being paid by Cochran immediately colors anything that you write or say about them. I find it diificult to imagine that you seriously think that an employee could write a critique of a product on which they are an integral part of the development team without making some kind of honest disclosure.

I OTOH, can honestly say that I loved my 16 but hated that dratted quarter that had to travel everywhere that my computer did. So much so that I finally gave up and bought a Shearwater. Full disclosue: I work for no DC company.

Forgive me for taking part in your perceived 'conspiracy'. I am, and always have been, completely honest about our products, and will not hesitate to discuss their shortcomings. I still don't understand the source of your indignation. But, to avoid triggering you or any of the other 'dive elitists' in the future, I will modify my posting 'style' to hopefully suit your requirements.

Really??? You don't see a conflict of interest in recommending a product when you don't disclose that you work for the manufacturer of that product? Amazing...

Actually, I was recommending the dive computer from the perspective of a divemaster (which, after all, was the context of the initial conversation). And since there seems to be some sensitivity to my posts, I will modify my 'style' to hopefully prevent any unpleasant perceptions of "conflict of interest".

Jeff, are the newer computers using the same algorithms as the older ones.Or are there tweaks to add conservatism for multi day, multi dive, short SI,bounces etc???
I have a collection of BTs EDGEs and Skinny Dippers but at some point would like to get a computer that allows tri mix and stupidly liberal diving.

Thank you for your interest. The Lifeguard dive computers utilize the same algorithm as the EMC-20H, but with more 'environmental awareness', including repetitive dives, ascent rate violations, and more. There is also the user option to modify the conservatism of the algorithm in the field. The Lifeguard computers (as well as the EMC-20H) are all tri-mix capable. As for 'stupidly liberal diving', our algorithm is very liberal without sacrificing the safety of the diver. In fact, if you check the entry for 'dive computer' on Wikipedia, the EMC-20H algorithm is listed as the most liberal of the commercially available algorithms. Hope this provides some insight, but feel free to messag eme with any further questions you may have. Be safe and have a great dive !!

Wow - way to dig a deeper hole! How, exactly were we supposed to know that Jeff works for Cochran? Your ID and signature clearly show you work for Cochran - his does not!

You seem to continue to mix up a simple request for transparency as a dig at Cochran, when no one has done that as far as I can see (well other than you admitting to diving Shearwater's )
.

" How, exactly were we supposed to know that Jeff works for Cochran?" A simple check of my information page would have shown that...I guess I'm not familiar with the requirements for posting on ScubaBoard yet...

You use moistened fingers and a quarter to bridge the contacts on the device for either turning it on or setting it up. The computer can differentiate between the resistance of fingers or metal and responds accordingly.

Make no mistake: It's a SUPERB device. I have over 600 dives on mine with nary an issue. The contacts are its strongest and weakest feature: Impossible to flood but impossible to program if you lose that infernal quarter.

That's not entirely true...I have programmed my EMC-20H with a dive knife, a coin other than a quarter, even a bottle cap. The only thing that the quarter is required for is to remove the cap for battery replacement.

Why would I suspect you worked for Cochran and feel a need to check your info? For transparency, you should have just added it to your signature like most other manufacturer's appear to do (and you now appear to have done). That way, it would have been obvious to all.

A ScubaBoard Staff Message...

Hey everyone. This comes up frequently, so it may be helpful to reiterate here. Mods on SB are, first and foremost, users. When they post, unless it is as a modpost like this one, please assume they are posting as a user. All such posts will be treated as such by the rest of the mod corps and will be edited, deleted or reported as necessary, same as everyone else.

This is one of the reasons I have removed the Staff badge from my profile, in order to minimise any confusion.

I know this needs to be taken on faith, but we have VERY clear instructions not to play favourites with companies, regardless of their advertising spends. Pete has enough advertisers waiting to step in if someone starts to play silly games.

Now, back to the regularly scheduled programming.

Apparently there is some sort of predefined posting style that I am not aware of...could you perhaps fill me in ??

Again, I apologize for not knowing what the acceptable standards are on this forum.

I believe that the need for a metal object, regardless of the type of object, to program a dive computer is what folks have an issue with? It does seem like a pain to me compared to other designs?
